[Childcare] Enjoy making horse origami! A collection of folding ideas
How about trying to fold a horse with origami? When you work on animal origami during childcare activities, there are moments when children’s eyes sparkle with excitement.
Horses are characterized by their four legs and three-dimensional shape, and as you fold, the anticipation grows: “What will the mane look like?” “Can we make it stand up?” We’ll share plenty of ideas that will be helpful for teachers—from step-by-step instructions and ways to play with the finished horse to educational objectives.
Enjoy the world of origami with the children while nurturing their imagination and fine motor development.

Cute! Origami horse face

Here’s a simple origami idea for making a horse’s face.
First, fold the paper into a triangle by bringing the top and bottom corners together.
Next, fold it into a triangle again by bringing the left and right corners together.
Unfold once to return to the single triangle, then fold the left and right edges down to meet the center crease.
Flip the paper top-to-bottom, then slightly open the previously folded corners on both sides to form the ears.
The remaining section will be the horse’s face, so tuck the left, right, and bottom corners inward to refine the shape.

Let’s make a freestanding horse out of origami.
We’ll be making a cut partway through, so please have scissors ready.
First, fold the paper into a triangle twice, squash the pocket to form two squares.
Place the paper so that the flap side points down, then fold the lower left and right edges to the center line to crease them.
Flip it over and do the same on the other side.
Fold down the top corner into a triangle to make a crease as well, then make a straight cut on both sides from the lower corners up to the base of the triangle you just creased.
Open out the two lower sections to the sides as you fold them upward, then fold the diamond in half along the vertical center line.
Repeat the same steps on the back.
Use an inside reverse fold at the top to form the head and tail, and use the remaining lower part to shape the legs.

Here’s an origami horse idea that could serve as a nice touch for your creation.
First, fold the paper into a triangle twice, then unfold it once to return to a single triangular fold.
Next, lift both corners upward and fold so that the base becomes slanted, crease well, and unfold.
Flip the paper top-to-bottom, then fold up the top corner of the triangle (one layer only).
Fold the left and right edges of the lifted section inward to form the mane.
Turn the paper over to the front, fold the mane downward, then flip the paper to the back again.
Fold the left and right corners downward and then back upward to create the ears.
Finally, tuck in the corners to refine the shape of the face, and you’re done.

Three-dimensional cute pony origami

It looks like it’s made from a single sheet, but it’s actually made from two sheets of origami, separated into the head, body and tail, and legs.
First, fold the origami into a triangle to make a crease.
You’ll be using this crease as you fold, so be sure to align the corners carefully.
For the head, body, and tail, flatten the pocketed sections and use inside reverse folds to shape them.
For the legs, start with a zabuton fold and then make fine creases, folding the corners into triangles to form the four legs.
Once the parts are complete, overlap the legs onto the body, glue them in place, and finish it as a horse.
Make the whole body! Cute horse origami

This is an idea where you make the head and body separately, glue them together, and finish it as a horse.
First, we’ll make the head: fold the origami paper into a triangle, then fold the left and right corners up to meet the top corner.
Next, as you would when making a samurai helmet, open the folded-up corners to the left and right and crease them, then fold them back along the creases.
These parts will be the horse’s ears.
Turn the paper over, fold one layer of the bottom corner up diagonally to make a triangle, crease it, and unfold.
Then fold the bottom corner up again into a small triangle, and fold the base of that small triangle up along the crease.
Fold the top corner down into a triangle, flip the paper over, fold the bottom corner up, then fold the left and right corners inward—this completes the head.
For the body, first fold the origami paper so it becomes a rectangle and make a crease.
Fold the top and bottom edges to that center crease, then fold the left and right edges to meet in the middle to make the paper a square again.
Open the pocketed sections and squash-fold them to make two boat shapes.
Fold the top left and right corners vertically inward to form the legs.
Tuck the lower left corner inside, then make a step fold on the right corner to create the tail.
Fold this in half, attach the head you made earlier, and it’s done.
Cool horse origami made from a single sheet

Here’s a recommended idea for when you want to make a three-dimensional horse.
Since there are many steps that involve creasing, practice aligning the edges and corners carefully before you take on the challenge.
Also, because there are quite a few fine folds, if a child is attempting it, it’s better to use larger origami paper.
Basically, you’ll fold along the creases, but you will also use inside reverse folds and outside reverse folds when forming the body and head.
It might be difficult to complete in one go, so try breaking the process up over a few days to finish it.
Also great for practicing scissor skills! 3D origami horse

Let’s use a single sheet of origami paper to make a free-standing horse.
This idea uses scissors to create the legs, so have them ready.
First, fold the paper into a preliminary “zabuton” base, then flip it over and fold along the top–bottom and left–right edges to make creases.
Use these creases to collapse the paper into a square base.
Fold all four corners in toward the center.
Next, squash the pocket sections on both sides of the square into rectangles so the overall shape looks like a house.
Then fold the left and right edges on both sides toward the center line, and swivel the layers so the folded sections are on the inside.
You should see two split points at the top; perform an inside reverse fold on each to form the head and tail.
Finally, cut the remaining lower section into the shape of legs, and you’re done!
