Origami: Mushroom

Origami: Mushroom

As one of the quintessential foods of autumn, mushrooms are surely indispensable.

The way they peek out from between fallen leaves has a certain charm.

Let’s try making mushrooms using origami.

The key point is to make fine creases to create the mushroom’s rounded shape.

By adjusting the folding method and cleverly using the reverse side of the paper, you can complete an adorable mushroom with differently colored cap and stem.

Their simple cuteness makes them perfect as accents in drawings or as part of decorations.

Torn-paper collage mushroom

How about adding patterns to a mushroom cap using torn-paper collage? First, cut out the mushroom cap and stem from construction paper.

If the children are old enough to use scissors, let them do it themselves; if not, the teacher should prepare the pieces in advance.

Next, tear colored origami paper into small pieces.

Then randomly glue the pieces onto the mushroom cap to decorate it.

Once you’ve covered it enough, attach the cap and stem to complete the mushroom.

If you like, draw a cute face on the stem with crayons or pens.

Bubbly little mushroom

Let’s use the bubble wrap lying around at home to make autumn-themed mushroom decorations! Draw the shapes you want on construction paper or cardstock and cut them out.

Then cut the bubble wrap to match those shapes and glue it on top.

After that, use permanent markers to color the bubble wrap.

You’ll create decorations that feel fresh thanks to bubble wrap’s unique texture.

Coloring the bubble wrap is also a sensory experience you don’t usually get, so kids are sure to enjoy it.

It’s a great craft that puts bubble wrap—often thrown away or hard to repurpose—to good use!

Mushroom pen holder

Let’s make a mushroom-themed pen holder, inspired by one of autumn’s seasonal delights! First, cover one of the openings of a toilet paper roll with thick paper, and wrap the outside with beige origami paper.

Then attach a mushroom cap cut out of drawing paper.

It’s a good idea to add patterns to the mushroom cap using a sponge dauber or round stickers.

Finally, add facial features to the toilet paper roll—the mushroom’s stem—if you like, and you’re done! It’s perfect for holding art supplies or as a gift for parents/guardians.

Origami and finger-stamp mushrooms

Origami and finger-stamp mushrooms

Let’s make cute mushrooms using origami and finger stamps.

Choose an origami sheet in your favorite color and fold it once into a triangle.

Next, dip your finger in paint of your choice and add spots with finger stamps.

You can use just one color or combine several.

When you’re done, cut out paper shapes for the mushroom pattern and assemble them to finish! It’s also a great idea to pair them with tree-shaped cutouts or combine mushrooms that kids have made to create an autumn wall display.

Try preparing mushrooms in various sizes, both large and small.

Footprints and sticker mushrooms

Footprints and sticker mushrooms

Let’s try making mushrooms using children’s footprints! First, trace the children’s footprints onto construction paper.

These footprints will be used as the mushroom stems.

Next, cut out mushroom cap shapes from construction paper.

Depending on the children’s ages, have the teacher handle this step.

Once the caps are ready, attach them to the heel side of the footprints.

Then, stick round stickers onto the caps to create the mushroom spots, and you’re done! For decoration, we recommend drawing autumn-themed pictures around the mushrooms, adding leaves and seasonal foods made from construction or origami paper, or gluing on fallen leaves collected from the playground.

Stylish mushrooms made with masking tape

Masking tape comes in all sorts of designs and patterns.

How about using that tape to make stylish mushrooms? On a sheet of white drawing paper, stick your favorite masking tapes randomly—vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.

Once you’ve added as much as you like, cut the paper into the shape of a mushroom cap, then pair it with another piece of paper cut into the shape of the mushroom stem to complete the craft.

Each child will choose different tapes and arrangements, resulting in wonderfully original creations.

Depending on the children’s ages, teachers should handle any steps that involve using scissors.
