Playing with instruments nurtures children’s ability to enjoy sound and to listen closely.
Above all, the experience of making music together will become a rich treasure for children.
This time, we’ll introduce instrument play activities by target age.
Choose ideas that fit your class and the children’s needs.
We also introduce several handmade instruments.
When children use instruments they’ve made themselves, they feel more attached to them and become more engaged in the activities.

[Craft] Making a guiro with a milk carton
![[Craft] Making a guiro with a milk carton](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0E90nnwNYF4/sddefault.jpg)
Let’s make a guiro from a milk carton! First, firmly tape the spout of the milk carton closed, draw a picture on construction paper, and glue it onto the carton.
Next, prepare five bendy straws, extend the flexible sections, and cut them to match the width of the carton.
Finally, tape the straws to the carton at equal intervals—and you’re done.
The sound is produced by rubbing the flexible ridges of the straws with chopsticks.
It’s great because you can make it easily with everyday materials! It’s also recommended to show the children a sample of what a guiro is and demonstrate the sound before the activity; it helps them form a clear image.
Give it a try!
paper plate castanets

Akuma Night Disco (feat. Nozomi Sato) – The Ghost's Strange Tale
This is a sound-play item that you can easily make with familiar materials.
First, fold a paper plate in half and attach a plastic bottle cap.
Make a hole in the middle of the fold, thread a rubber band through it, and tie it so it won’t come out.
Decorate it, and you’re done! When you tap it lightly, it produces a fun sound that helps develop hand movement and a sense of rhythm.
By varying the volume and rhythm, it can also boost concentration and promote emotional stability.
The time spent making it with your child becomes a wonderful opportunity for communication filled with smiles.
Be sure to include it in your playtime with your child.
plastic bottle drum

Make it with a plastic bottle and a balloon! Here’s an idea for a plastic-bottle drum.
Wouldn’t it be fun to play an instrument easily at home? This plastic-bottle drum is perfect for that.
You’ll need a plastic bottle, a balloon, a utility knife, scissors, a permanent marker, and tape.
If you make special drumsticks using disposable chopsticks and aluminum foil, you’ll be ready to play right away! You can also try creating a scale by changing the bottle size and the tension of the balloon.
Plastic Bottle Guitar

Let’s make an instrument! Here’s an idea for a plastic-bottle guitar.
Have you ever wanted your very own instrument? This time, let’s try making a guitar using a plastic bottle.
You’ll need a plastic bottle, pushpins, rubber bands, chopsticks, a tray, vinyl tape, a permanent marker, a utility knife, scissors, and a craft board.
In the video, they make designs like a frog and a paper umbrella ghost, but it could be fun to finish it with any motif you like.
Playable maracas

Taught by a professional percussionist! Here are ideas for making maracas from scrap materials.
Do you know the term “scrap materials”? It refers to materials or items that would otherwise be thrown away.
Common household scraps include toilet paper rolls and plastic bottles.
This time, let’s make maracas using scrap materials! What you’ll need: empty capsule toy containers, toilet paper rolls, beads, stickers, washi tape, and regular tape.
Give it a try!
Musical Instrument Crafting: Guitar

We’d like to introduce a DIY musical-instrument craft: a guitar you can play once it’s finished.
Prepare four paper cups, three rubber bands, a felt-tip pen, tape, and scissors.
First, place the bottoms of two paper cups together and secure them with tape so they don’t shift.
Next, make three slits in the rim of each of the remaining two paper cups.
Insert these slit cups onto the taped-together cups, and hook the three rubber bands onto the slits so they don’t cross over like an X.
Finally, pluck the rubber bands to check that they make sound—that’s it! The steps are simple, so give it a try!

Tambourine of Box and Bell

Let me introduce an idea for a tambourine made with a box and bells.
You’ll need a round box, masking tape, wire, an awl, decorative origami paper, double-sided tape, and scissors.
Using sparkly origami or decorating with cutouts of your favorite motifs will really lift the mood! Divide up the tasks with the kids and make the tambourine together.
It’s safest for a parent or teacher to handle the step of punching holes in the container with the awl.
Enjoy making music with your very own original tambourine!
