A roundup of Japanese loud rock bands: the appeal of ferocious riffs + more
As the name suggests, “loud rock” is a term used as a catch-all for rock that features heavy, intense riffs and phrases, and it began gaining popularity mainly from the late ’90s into the 2000s.
In addition to aggressive riffs and phrases, loud rock often incorporates vocals like death growls and harsh screams, as well as rap.
At the same time, it’s not uncommon to have choruses with beautiful clean tones and approachable melodies; the coexistence of calm and intensity is one of loud rock’s key appeals.
Because of this breadth, loud rock is considered difficult to define, but in this article we’ll take a broader view of the genre and introduce a bunch of recommended bands!

Goodnight, Creul WorldSALTY DOG

An emo band formed in Tokyo in 2011.
They’re characterized by a sound that combines a powerful Norwegian female vocalist with catchy melodies and an intense, modern loud rock approach infused with electronic elements.
In 2015, they made back-to-back appearances on major stages at SUMMER SONIC 2015 and Ozzfest 2015, and also won Red Bull Live on the Road.
Re:playwrong city

Formed in Tokyo in 2012.
Actively incorporating punk, metal, hardcore, and screamo, they develop songs refined through their own unique backgrounds.
In 2014, former tricot drummer komaki♂ joined.
In 2015, they performed at Ozzfest Japan 2015 held at Makuhari Messe, making them a band you won’t want to take your eyes off in the coming years.
Teenage FarewellALPHASE

Formed in 2008 at the young age of 15, this loud rock band from Aichi has been active at live venues nationwide.
In 2010 they changed their name to ALPHASE, and in 2013 they became the current six-member lineup.
Centered on dual vocals, they feature the intense drum sound that forms the core of loud rock and twin guitars.
They are currently gaining attention, including through appearances at Japan dates of overseas artists’ tours.
K.OABNORMAL VOLTAGE

This is the only music video track by ABNORMAL VOLTAGE, a heavyweight of Nagoya’s loud rock scene who were signed to gil sound works—the label that produced coldrain.
Starting with coldrain, they remain a legendary band admired by many musicians to this day.
Just TonightALL OFF

Formed in 2004.
As the inaugural winners of COUNTDOWN JACK (an open audition), they performed at COUNTDOWN JAPAN 08/09 at the end of 2008, which led to their debut in 2010.
With the motto “The band is all about live shows,” they have stirred up waves of frenzy and joy at live houses and festivals across the country.
I can speak Japanese.MINOR LEAGUE

Since the heyday of Japcore, MINOR LEAGUE has been unleashing a singular hardcore-mixture sound where airy looseness coexists with madness.
The lyrics, spewed out in a shadowy, cult-like manner by the two MCs, deliver an exceptional trip.
Truly the loud rock of wicked grown-ups.
GIMMICKENGU

It may sound odd to say they appeared too early, but even though the band has already broken up, I really want the kids who only listen to today’s Japanese loud rock to give them a listen.
They were a genuinely skilled band that shone in the gap between the end of the nu-metal/mixture boom and the current loud rock boom.
