Aim for a high score! Karaoke songs for men to achieve top scores

If you’re simply aiming for a high score at karaoke, the key points for song selection will naturally be to choose songs with “easy-to-sing melodies,” “easy-to-understand lyrics,” and “clear, straightforward rhythms.”

That being the case, your picks will tend to come from the ’90s and earlier—so-called Showa-era and early Heisei kayōkyoku, new music, and J-pop.

Many recent songs have complex melodies and rhythms, and plenty of people think “This is hard!” after just one listen.

In this article, aimed at men who want to score high at karaoke, I’ve also proactively selected relatively singable tracks even from among more recent songs.

Compared to older hits, these are a bit more challenging to sing, but each song’s write-up includes tips and points to watch for to help you boost your score, so please use this as a guide and give them a try!

It feels great when you nail a high score!

Young manSaijō Hideki

Hideki Saijo – Young Man (Y.M.C.A.)
Young manSaijō Hideki

This was Hideki Saijo’s 28th single, released in February 1979.

It’s a remake of the Village People’s hit “Y.M.C.A.,” which was popular in the U.S.

at the time, with Japanese lyrics and arranged in a kayō pop style.

When it came out, it became such a massive hit that you could say there wasn’t a person in Japan who didn’t know it.

As of 2020, anyone in their late 40s or so has probably sung and played along to it at least once, doing the Y.M.C.A!! hand motions.

It’s a very fun song with a sporty vibe.

While I’m introducing it under the theme of aiming for a high score, it might actually be a bit uncool to worry about points when singing this one.

I hope you’ll just enjoy it to the fullest—choreography and all—no overthinking needed!

Naniwa Danshi

Doki itDaigo Nishihata, Shunsuke Michieda, Kento Nagao, Joichiro Fujiwara, Kyohei Takahashi

Leveraging the strength of all being from the Kansai region, Naniwa Danshi continues to captivate audiences with performances brimming with Kansai-specific charm.

They made their CD debut in November 2021, and many of their subsequent releases have ranked high on the Oricon charts.

The group has built a sparkling track record, including winning Best 5 New Artists at the 36th Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Every member is also skilled in acting, thriving across a wide range of fields such as TV dramas, films, and stage productions.

In April 2024, they formed the limited-time unit KAMIGATA BOYZ together with other Johnny’s groups from Kansai, further accelerating their momentum.

They’re highly recommended for those drawn to the blend of friendly Kansai dialect and polished performance.

SubaruTanimura Shinji

SubaruTanimura Shinji

This was Shinji Tanimura’s second single, released on April 1, 1980.

Counted among his signature songs, it remains his best-selling number as a solo artist.

Tanimura himself reportedly said he came up with the song while lying down, and it features a very singable melody.

It’s an ideal choice when you want to aim for a high score at karaoke.

Try singing it by tracing both the melody and rhythm as precisely as the original.

MARIONETTEBOØWY

BOOWY [Marionette] Music Video BOØWY Kyosuke Himuro
MARIONETTEBOØWY

The sixth single by the rock band BOØWY, released in July 1987.

At the time of its release, it landed many tie-ins and became a big hit, making it one of their signature songs—so many of you have probably heard it before.

There’s no need for complicated explanations to sing this one at karaoke! The vocal melody doesn’t span a wide range at all, so many men should be able to sing it without changing the key.

Don’t overthink it—just have fun.

Enoshima EscarASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

Enoshima EscarASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

A track included on ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION’s album “Surf Bungaku Kamakura (Complete Edition),” which was released in July 2023.

It has a very singable rhythm and tempo, the vocal melody doesn’t require a particularly wide range, and the melody itself is very simple with almost no eccentric twists.

So this is truly one of the best songs to choose when you want to aim for a high score at karaoke.

While faithfully and accurately tracing the original rhythm and melody, don’t try too hard to sing it skillfully—sing it plainly.

I think that’s the key to making it sound nice and appealing.

Definitely give it a try!

strawberryBUMP OF CHICKEN

BUMP OF CHICKEN is a rock band that has remained popular for many years.

They continue to release great songs without changing their musical style, even now.

Their new track, “strawberry,” stays true to their sound.

As you’d expect from BUMP OF CHICKEN, it features a vocal line with strong J-pop elements and is easy to sing throughout.

In addition, the long notes are relatively restrained, so even those who struggle with breath control can sing it without issue.

Give it a try and aim for a high score with this song.

Mary AnnTHE ALFEE

This is THE ALFEE’s (credited as ALFEE at the time of release) 16th single, released on June 21, 1983.

It was the unit’s first song to make the Top 10.

In terms of sound, it strongly reflects the influence of the so-called “corporate rock” genre that dominated Western charts at the time, such as JOURNEY and ASIA.

However, the vocal melody follows in the tradition of 1970s folk songs and New Music, making it very easy to sing.

I think it’s a perfect choice when you want to aim for a high karaoke score.

It might be even more fun if you recreate the chorus together with your friends!
