Aim for a high score! Karaoke songs for men to achieve top scores

If you’re simply aiming for a high score at karaoke, the key points for song selection will naturally be to choose songs with “easy-to-sing melodies,” “easy-to-understand lyrics,” and “clear, straightforward rhythms.”

That being the case, your picks will tend to come from the ’90s and earlier—so-called Showa-era and early Heisei kayōkyoku, new music, and J-pop.

Many recent songs have complex melodies and rhythms, and plenty of people think “This is hard!” after just one listen.

In this article, aimed at men who want to score high at karaoke, I’ve also proactively selected relatively singable tracks even from among more recent songs.

Compared to older hits, these are a bit more challenging to sing, but each song’s write-up includes tips and points to watch for to help you boost your score, so please use this as a guide and give them a try!

It feels great when you nail a high score!

Imperial Regent Declarationsadamasashi

Released on July 10, 1979, this is singer-songwriter Masashi Sada’s 14th solo single.

As of December 2021, it remains his biggest hit.

Given Sada’s distinctive high-tone voice, some listeners might think at first, “How could I score well with this?” But don’t worry—the melody itself is very simple, easy to remember, and easy to sing.

I hope you’ll enjoy singing it while appreciating the lyrics, which are structured like a story.

To modern ears, the lyrics may feel a bit old-fashioned.

Star SongKobukuro

Kobukuro “Star Song”
Star SongKobukuro

A track by Kobukuro included on their album “Star Made,” released on August 4, 2021.

As the title suggests, it’s a gentle song that evokes a quiet summer night sky, and musically it’s very much in their style—easy to hum and approachable.

If you focus on singing carefully throughout, it shouldn’t be too hard to score high at karaoke.

That said, the high notes in the chorus might be a bit tough for the average male singer, so it might be a good idea to check the key settings in advance.

Rollin’ Rollin’Nanao Tabibito × Yakeno Hara

Rollin’ Rollin’ / TAVITO NANAO × YAKENOHARA
Rollin' Rollin'Nanao Tabibito × Yakeno Hara

This track by the special unit of Tavio Nanao and Yakenohara is crafted with a simple, minimal arrangement.

Since it has both melodic and rap sections, it could be fun to tackle it as a duo with a friend.

Of course, doing both parts yourself would be interesting too!

Browniewanuka

Brownie / Wa Nuka [Music Video]
Browniewanuka

This is the third digital-only single by singer-songwriter Wanuka, released in June 2021.

True to the artist’s name (perhaps?), the melody and rhythm carry a distinctly Japanese flavor that leaves quite an impression.

The vocal melody is centered in a comfortable midrange that most people can sing, so range shouldn’t be a hurdle for karaoke.

To aim for a high score in karaoke, the key point is how well you can reproduce the song’s overall nonchalant vibe and its light, buoyant feel—without pushing the beat ahead.

The expressive demands aren’t particularly difficult, so study the original carefully and give it a try.

Thinking of youMatsushita Kohei

Kohei Matsushita – Thinking of You (Music Video)
Thinking of youMatsushita Kohei

It’s a track from actor and singer-songwriter Kohei Matsushita’s album “R&ME,” released in December 2023, and it was pre-released ahead of the album.

It’s crafted as a ballad with a strikingly simple piano and beautiful string arrangement.

Matsushita sings it with rich, straightforward emotion, without relying on flashy technical tricks.

The vocal melody is also very simple and unadorned, making it one of the best choices if you want to aim for a high score at karaoke.

That said, because it’s such an emotional song, I’d really love for readers to sing it just as they feel—freely and from the heart—and immerse themselves in the world of the music.

rainbowSuda Masaki

Masaki Suda 'Niji' (Rainbow)
rainbowSuda Masaki

This is Masaki Suda’s fifth single overall, released on November 25, 2020.

It was selected as the theme song for the Toho film STAND BY ME Doraemon 2.

It’s a ballad that makes you feel very warm and gentle when you listen to it.

The melody is crafted with a tender, beautiful flow, and I think it’s the kind of song you could choose for karaoke and aim for a high score without too much strain.

In the high notes of the chorus, Suda sings with a lot of power and projection, but if you’re trying to maximize your score, it might be better to hold back a little there.

planetariumBUMP OF CHICKEN

It’s BUMP OF CHICKEN’s 9th single, released in July 2005.

It’s a very pleasant song that feels quintessentially them—catchy, poppy, and with a touch of romance.

The vocal melody doesn’t go extremely high or low, making it easy to sing and a great choice for aiming for a high karaoke score.

Since the tempo is somewhat slow, pay attention to your pitch on long notes and be mindful of dynamics—adjusting intensity between different sections of the song.
