I’m Hiyoko-sensei, a former nursery school teacher from Hyogo Prefecture. Ever since I was five, my dream was to become a childcare worker, and before I knew it, 20 years had passed since I achieved that dream. The time I spent happily with children—playing piano, singing songs, and doing finger-play—are priceless memories to me. Currently, while raising three children of my own, I work at an after-school day service, engaging with children and providing individualized developmental support. Drawing on my diverse experiences as a childcare worker and as a mother, I hope to express and convey my thoughts through writing.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Hinamatsuri.

How about incorporating hand-play songs into the fun? Sing, play, and feel the warmth of spring with your whole body! If you search on video sites, you’ll find children’s songs with choreography—like “Ureshii Hinamatsuri” and “Kekkonshiki o Agemashita”—so be sure to check them out.

It’s perfect for parent-child bonding time at home, too! Let’s have both girls and boys join in together!

Making gifts for kindergarten graduates

How about having the current students hand a gift to the graduating children and incorporating the making of that graduation gift into an art/craft activity? Let’s create something that’s fun to make, memorable for the graduates who receive it, and practical to use.

For example, you could use cardboard or empty boxes to make picture frames and put in photos from memorable moments at the preschool, or use milk cartons and plastic bottles to make pencil holders, as well as bookmarks they can use in elementary school—these are very practical and highly recommended.

Put your heartfelt wishes for the graduates into the gifts and create something wonderful.

Although there are regional differences, cherry-blossom viewing is best enjoyed from mid-March onward.

Just seeing the cherry blossoms begin to open warms the heart and makes you feel spring in the air.

You might drop by a cherry-lined street on a walk, or, if there’s a cherry tree in the park, enjoy a snack beneath it.

It feels wonderful on a sunny day! As it gets warmer, flowers other than cherry blossoms start to bloom, too.

How about a blossom-viewing outing where you look for those kinds of wildflowers as well? I think it’s an event idea that will make you look forward to April!
