A train that transforms

[Experiment] I tried making a transforming train out of a milk carton! [Craft]
A train that transforms

I think a lot of people make trains out of milk cartons.

But if that’s all, it’s the same as everyone else and not very exciting, right? Well, this train can actually transform.

Isn’t it amazing that you can enjoy it in two different forms? All you need are two milk cartons, some cellophane tape and vinyl tape, and a pen to decorate the train! It’s super easy, so give it a try!

boat

boat

You can make a genuine “boat” out of a milk carton.

The materials are simple—things like wooden chopsticks and rubber bands—but the construction is complex, so it’s best for dexterous kids or upper elementary grades.

By using the stretch and recoil of rubber bands to drive a propeller, you can build a fairly sturdy boat.

You can actually run it and play with it in the bath or a pool.

Milk Carton Rolling Tower

Let’s reuse empty milk cartons to make a fun rolling tower where a ping-pong ball tumbles down! Cut the milk cartons and connect two of them to create a long cylindrical base.

Make holes and slits in paper plates, attach them in a stepped arrangement, and adjust the angles so the ball rolls smoothly through.

Add slits to the side of the cylinder so the ball won’t stop midway and will drop all the way to the bottom.

If you wrap the whole thing with a tube-shaped cover made from a clear file, the ball won’t fly out and it’s safer to play with.

A bonus is that kids can learn about gravity and incline through the speed of the rolling ball and the fun sounds it makes.

It’s an eco-friendly idea that uses recycled materials to create a moving, interactive project.

Creeper made from a milk carton

[Elementary School Summer Crafts & Independent Research] Make a Creeper from a Milk Carton—with a Head-Popping Mechanism!
Creeper made from a milk carton

Minecraft is a hugely popular game among kids.

Creepers are characters that appear in Minecraft and explode when they get close to the player.

Let’s make a craft that captures that feature using an empty milk carton.

Besides a milk carton, prepare green plastic bottle caps, bamboo skewers, and oil-based clay as well.

Cut the milk carton and wrap it with green vinyl tape to make the Creeper’s body.

Then cut the body section further and attach parts.

Use another milk carton for the head along with vinyl string or rubber bands to create a mechanism that “explodes.” Because kids use fine motor skills to build it, it helps improve their concentration.

Once it’s finished and displayed at school, you can almost hear friends saying, “Wow, that’s awesome!”

Spinning piggy bank

Why not make a fun piggy bank where the coins spin as they go in? It’s a perfect idea for a summer vacation craft.

First, slice a milk carton into rings, press the corners to flatten the center space, and make four “blades” to form a propeller.

Decorate the edges with vinyl tape, and make two large propellers and four small ones in the same way.

Skewer a large propeller on a bamboo stick, then add two small propellers on each side to create a spinning mechanism.

Insert this into a clear tube, make a coin slot in the lid, put the lid on, and you’re done.

Fuzzy Navel – Conton Candy

Here’s an idea for making a spinning top you blow on using a milk carton.

First, cut the carton about 1.5 cm up from the bottom, then make slits at the four corners and open it up.

Next, rotating the carton in a consistent direction from each corner, cut along the edges of the bottom.

Leave about 1 cm uncut at the ends.

Bend the sections you just cut inward so they gather toward the center, and decorate with masking tape or stickers to finish.

If you blow straight down from above, it will spin around and around.

This is a handmade bamboo-copter (taketombo) made from a milk carton.

Cut the milk carton into strips and draw patterns on them with a pen.

Coloring them brightly makes it look beautiful when it spins! Next, make a slit in a straw that will serve as the handle, and insert a milk carton piece folded in half.

Staple the inserted part firmly, then fold the milk carton diagonally and spread the wings to both sides to finish.

To make it spin well, add a bit of weight by putting tape on the tip of the milk carton—this is the key! Since it’s made from a soft milk carton, it’s safe to play with indoors.

Let’s try making and playing with a “rocket” using a milk carton.

Both the launch pad and the rocket are made from milk cartons.

Roll up the part that becomes the rocket and decorate it with masking tape or other materials.

For the launch pad, attach a rubber band to the bottom part of the carton, and finish it cutely with your favorite fabric or other decorations.

Washi papermaking

Summer Vacation Craft Series ♡ Part 1: Making Japanese Paper (Papermaking) from a Milk Carton [Koujoucho] DIY
Washi papermaking

We use paper every day without thinking about it, but you can make cute washi paper using a milk carton! From one milk carton, you can make about two postcards.

It takes a few days to soak the carton in water and to dry the washi, so it won’t be finished right away, but it’s very cute—please give it a try.

In addition to the milk carton, you’ll need laundry starch, a blender, a container, a tray for draining water, a laundry net, boards such as cutting boards for pressing, and cute kitchen paper or paints to add patterns.

Cute accessory case

A small container that can be used for many purposes—like organizing around your desk or table, or as a treasure box for keeping precious items.

Using a milk carton, you can make a sturdy, reliable container! Open up the milk carton, cut off the top and bottom, and keep three of the side panels intact.

Next, cover it with your favorite wrapping paper, make two vertical slits, fold it up, and staple it in place—that’s it! It’s cute as is, but you can also add a handle or other touches to make it even nicer.

It’s easy and fun to make, so give it a try during summer vacation or when spending time at home!
