[Mini Sports Day] Carefully selected indoor-friendly events that really get everyone excited!
Last updated:

A mini sports day refers to a small-scale sports event held indoors.

Because it isn’t affected by the weather and can be run compactly in just a few hours to half a day, it’s held as an event at kindergartens and elementary schools, and even as a community activity.

In this article, we’ll introduce a selection of perfect activities for a mini sports day all at once.

We’ve gathered everything from classic sports day events to recreational games that children of different ages can enjoy together, so please use it as a reference.

Caterpillar race

Sports Day Mishap: Caterpillar Race
Caterpillar race

Caterpillar racing is a game where you get down on all fours inside a ring-shaped piece of cardboard and crawl forward to race.

Because you can’t see ahead and it’s hard to get the hang of moving smoothly at first, it gets surprisingly exciting! By changing the size of the “caterpillar,” you can not only play solo but also adapt it into a two-person team event.

If you make a caterpillar big enough for adults, it’s great for parent-child races, too.

For two-person teams, the trick is to call out in rhythm as you move so the front and back can match their speed.

Play with the roll you got

Play with the roll you got

A simple dice-roll race you can enjoy indoors or outdoors.

Each player rolls a large die once, then runs to the spot marked with the same number as the roll, circles around it, and returns to the start.

Because the running distance changes depending on the number rolled, the venue is sure to get lively.

You can also customize it, such as making the die faces easy to see or surrounding the numbered papers with unique cones or objects.

Hula hoop relay

This is a relay where two people run together inside a hula hoop.

Mark the starting point and the turnaround point, and divide everyone into teams.

At the starting signal, the first pair from each team runs.

They go around the turnaround point, return to the start, and pass the hula hoop to the next pair.

The team whose last pair returns to the start first wins.

It’s important to keep in sync; if you don’t match your speed, you can lose balance and fall.

At the turnaround point, it helps if the person on the inside becomes the pivot to make a smooth turn!

Rag-wiping relay

Zōkin-gake Relay 2013: Full-throttle!! Hilarious!! Tons of wipeouts! lol
Rag-wiping relay

How about turning floor wiping into a sport and enjoying it as a relay? You don’t see this style of wiping floors much these days, but you might come across it in old stories or fairy tales.

You place the rag on the floor, press it with your hands, and dash forward, sliding it along the floor—then, since it’s a relay, you hurry to the turnaround point and come back to hand off to the next person.

Setting up cones and making a course where you swing around in a U-turn could make it even more exciting!

Courier relay

Courier relay

This is an event that reimagines the relay race, one of the most exciting staples of a sports day.

Teams of four each hold one corner of a wooden platform and run, passing along the items loaded on top instead of a baton.

Because you have to be careful not to drop the load—not just sprint ahead—you can also enjoy the strategic element of devising how to run.

If you increase the number of items with each lap, the difficulty ramps up toward the end!
