Because of his introverted and quiet nature, Mompou had no choice but to give up the path of a pianist, yet his artistic spirit remained devoted to composition throughout his life.
His music is delicate yet filled with profound emotion, and his piano collection Impressions intimes—one of his signature works—can be seen as emblematic of this.
The fifth piece, Sad Birds, suffused with a poignancy reminiscent of the murmurs of a small bird living with sorrow, contains passages so quiet they are almost inaudible; but the more attentively you listen, the more its delicate tones seep into you.
