[Memories] A Collection of Nostalgic and Classic Popular Vocaloid Songs

It’s no exaggeration to say that Vocaloid grew up alongside internet culture.

Sparked by the release of the MEIKO library in 2004, countless masterpieces have continued to be created up to the present day.

Especially after Hatsune Miku’s debut in 2007, there are surely people who devoted their entire youth to the explosive Vocaloid boom centered on Niconico Douga.

In this article, we’ve put together a collection of nostalgic Vocaloid songs that helped shape that scene.

It’s a playlist perfect for diving into memories or discovering something new!

Mikan Ningen (Incomplete Human) vividly portrays the turmoil of not knowing what the other person is thinking.

The creator is YM, a multi-talented artist active in singing, illustration, and composition.

The song’s protagonist believes that their inability to understand the other person’s feelings stems from themselves, and uses the title phrase “Incomplete Human” as a way of self-reproach.

It’s a track that delves into the messy depths of the human psyche, so if you enjoy that kind of genre, you’ll surely like it.

This is a guitar rock track that draws you into a decadent, downer world.

Vocaloid producer Mr.

Tanaka B’s signature song “Shinkai City Underground” was released in 2011.

Its cool tone, marked by resonant distortion, is striking, and Kagamine Rin’s somewhat innocent vocals amplify the song’s uncanny atmosphere.

The chorus makes you want to sing along yourself.

When people think of a “cool Rin song,” this work is likely one that comes to mind.

Some of you might associate Vocaloid songs with “mix-up rock full of dizzying twists and turns.” PolyphonicBranch (aka Polipho) released the track “2D Dream Fever” in 2012.

By 2015, it had surpassed one million views on Niconico, making it a massively popular song.

The vocal lines—extremely hard for human singers to imitate—embody the quintessential “this is Vocaloid!” feel.

You’re overwhelmed by the sheer power the whole time, and before you know it, you’ve been swept all the way to the outro.

It’s also been novelized, so check it out if you’re interested!

This song is by sasakure.UK, one of the leading Vocaloid producers who has continued to be active at the forefront of the Vocaloid scene and has also worked on pieces like “Tondemo Wonders” and “Future Eve.” It was released in February 2009.

The work is characterized by its unpredictable song structure and avant-garde sound that incorporates chiptune.

Even back then, it already had that distinct “sasakure.UK sound,” which is great.

Even now, long after its release, it still feels “new.” A remake version was uploaded in 2019, so if you haven’t heard it yet, definitely check it out!

“Sakura” is a track where you can enjoy an ultra-high-tone voice that’s unique to VOCALOID.

It’s a song released by nakano4.

The intro starts with intermittent, ultra-low bass and then quickly ramps up into a powerful build.

Another major feature is the contrast: while the A and B sections are relatively low, the chorus soars into extremely high notes.

That gap is addictive.

Also, pay attention to the sharp, clean ending—it should feel like a striking contrast to the intro.
