Hisoka’s Math Magic

[Revealed] Reproducing Hisoka’s number magic from Hunter x Hunter & an ultra-detailed explanation
Hisoka's Math Magic

This is a magic trick based on a prophecy performed by Hisoka, a character from the hugely popular manga HUNTER×HUNTER.

First, think of any number you like, add 4 to it, and then double the result.

Next, subtract 6 from that number, divide by 2, and then subtract the original number you thought of—amazingly, the result is 1! At first glance, it seems like a surprising prophecy trick, but if you write the sequence as an equation and analyze it step by step, the secret becomes clear.

In the story, you’re instructed to choose your initial number from 1 to 13, but the answer will be 1 for any number 14 or higher as well!

Guessing age using a calculator

For those looking for a simple magic trick, I recommend an age-guessing trick using a calculator.

First, have them enter their age into the calculator.

Then have them multiply by 2 and press equals.

Next, add 18 and press equals, then multiply by 2 and press equals, and finally subtract 36 and press equals.

At this point, take the calculator and divide by 4.

You’ll get their age.

It can be a bit tricky to memorize the steps, but give it a try!

Guess the number written on the paper

No prep needed! I'll teach you a method to guess any freely written 4-digit number. The pinnacle of impromptu magic.
Guess the number written on the paper

Quick, impromptu magic tricks are handy to have up your sleeve.

So here’s one where you guess a number someone has written on a piece of paper.

First, prepare a palm-sized piece of paper and a pen.

Fold the paper into quarters and draw a line slightly above the center.

Ask the spectator to write any four-digit number above the line, and their name or the date below it.

Have them confirm the paper isn’t see-through, then you reveal the number.

The secret lies in how you fold the paper—when you place your fingers just right, the performer can see the number.

Create a table where adding any parts results in the selected number

A magic square reveal where no matter which row, column, or diagonal you add up, it becomes the chosen number. Please don’t replay this...
Create a table where adding any parts results in the selected number

It’s a mysterious magic trick where the numbers placed in a 4×4 grid all add up to the same total in every row, column, diagonal, the four corners, the central 2×2 block, and each set of four corner cells—everything matches.

First, have the spectator name any larger two-digit number, 20 or above.

Then you start filling the 4×4 grid so that the sum across each row matches the chosen number.

It looks like you’re placing numbers at random, but in reality, three of the four numbers in each row are fixed.

The remaining one cell in the row takes a value calculated from the chosen number minus 21, adjusted by adding or subtracting as needed.

As you fill in the memorized numbers and the mentally calculated ones, the originally named number appears from all sorts of directions.

Since quick calculation is required, be sure to practice thoroughly before performing!

A prophecy of numbers using a calendar

A prophecy of numbers using a calendar

It’s a magic trick using a calendar.

First, have someone outline a 4-column by 4-row block of numbers on the calendar.

The magician then predicts the total and writes it down on a note.

Next, ask them to circle any one number and draw lines through the entire row and column of that number.

From the remaining numbers without lines, have them choose another number and do the same—circle it and draw lines through its row and column.

Repeat this two more times, and then add up the four chosen numbers.

When you open the note, the predicted total matches perfectly! The secret is that if you add the numbers on the two diagonals of the 4×4 block and then double that sum, you get the final total.

It’s a curious number trick that stays entertaining even after you reveal the method.
