For Seniors: Fun Entertainment That Excites at Nursing Homes

Throughout the year, senior care facilities hold a variety of events such as cherry-blossom viewing parties, summer festivals, Respect for the Aged Day celebrations, and Christmas parties.

Staff members may find themselves wondering each year what kind of entertainment will delight the residents.

So this time, we’d like to introduce recommended entertainment ideas that seniors will enjoy!

To make sure seniors have fun, we’ve included a wide range of ideas—from period dramas and magic to singing and dancing.

Please use these suggestions as a reference and adapt them creatively to fit your event.

[For Seniors] Liven Up the Nursing Home! Fun Entertainment (61–70)

tea party

Spring Tea Gathering: At Okayama's Special Nursing Homes Nishi-Umi-so and Kenro-en
tea party

A tea gathering is an event where guests are entertained with tea, and it’s often associated with being held in harmony with each season.

This concept hosts the tea gathering with the current season as its theme, inviting guests to gently sense the transition of the seasons.

Seasonal sweets and surrounding decorations are key points for conveying the time of year, so let’s be attentive not only to how the tea is prepared but also to these details.

It’s also recommended to recreate tea ceremony etiquette as much as possible, and for those with experience, to have them try preparing the tea themselves.

Fox Dance

Let’s dance the “Fox Dance” in the caregiving setting! [Rehabilitation Day Salon ‘Umi’] Day service (daycare) in Yokosuka City
Fox Dance

As a Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters performance, the Fox Dance became a huge craze in 2022.

Danced to “The Fox,” it also significantly boosted the popularity of the team’s fox character.

How about trying the Fox Dance as an activity? Staff can put on fox ears and tails and dance like the Fighters Girls, or everyone participating can enjoy dancing together to liven things up.

There are also dance videos you can enjoy while seated, so be sure to use those as a reference.

Pull-the-string game

[Recreation] It was insanely exciting! #DayService #DayServiceRecreation #ImageChange
Pull-the-string game

As the name suggests, here’s a fun game where all you do is pull a string.

Preparation is simple.

First, prepare many paper cups with long strings wound around them.

Get one basket and you’re set.

Have the participating seniors sit in a circle and hold the ends of the strings.

Gather the paper cups in the center and cover them with the basket.

Now the game begins.

Lift the basket, and before it can be dropped back down to cover the cups, pull the strings to snatch the paper cups away.

That’s all there is to it, but it gets very exciting.

It also helps build agility, so it’s recommended for recreation at senior facilities.

karaoke

Who wouldn’t think of their hometown? Healthy Singing Voice Karaoke
karaoke

Karaoke is great because you can enjoy it even in little pockets of free time, and it’s a good way to blow off steam.

Belting out a song at the top of your lungs offers a unique kind of pleasure you can’t really get elsewhere.

Singing solo—so-called “hitokara”—is nice, but getting lively with a group is fun too.

Singing nostalgic pop songs can bring back memories and spark conversations about the old days.

It’s also fun to play a game by just playing the intros and doing an intro quiz! Another way to enjoy karaoke is to use a machine with a scoring feature.

String Balloon Relay

Recreation for seniors: Simple and exciting! String-and-balloon drop
String Balloon Relay

It’s a game where you work with the person across from you to skillfully control a string you’re holding and carry a balloon to a target location.

Because you can’t move the balloon well with your own power alone, you feel a bit of frustration, but also the fun of cooperation.

If you make it like a relay where you pass the balloon to the next person, not only coordination with the person opposite you but also strategy with the person before and after you is tested, which makes the game even more engaging.

It’s a game where the spirit of cooperation is key, including how you tension and move the string.
