[Childcare] Perfect for 3-year-olds! October craft ideas
October brings a stretch of autumn-like weather.
Many preschools and kindergartens are likely planning events such as field trips and sports days.
Children grow in both mind and body as they gain a variety of experiences.
Here are some craft ideas perfect for October.
You can create activities that connect seamlessly with everyday care, using seasonal materials or motifs from seasonal events.
Let’s watch over the children so they can stay focused and enjoy their time.
Because the children’s creations are treated as works of art, we use the term “制作” (seisaku: creation/production) in the text.

Pumpkin box

A simple and cute pumpkin box craft idea that soothes the heart.
Open an origami sheet after creasing it vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, then fold the corners toward the center.
After making a crease in the middle, fold the paper toward the center and open the top and bottom flaps.
Fold the left and right sides toward the center, crease, then open them again.
Fold the paper so it aligns with the center line to create a three-dimensional effect.
Tuck the bottom section inside the box to finish.
Why not make this with children as a handy item for holding treats or as a Halloween decoration?
papercut pumpkin

This is a paper-cutting craft with a Halloween pumpkin motif that lets you enjoy clever cutting techniques and ideas.
Fold a sheet of origami paper in half three times, draw your illustration, and then cut it out.
When cutting out parts like the eyes, nose, and mouth, it’s recommended that a childcare professional handle that step.
Alternatively, you can cut out just the pumpkin silhouette and have the children either glue on facial features or draw them.
You can display the finished piece as is, or use it for a garland or hanging decoration—both are great project ideas.
Candy trinket box

October is the season for Halloween, which kids love! Here’s how to make a cute candy-shaped treat holder that a 3-year-old can help with.
Materials: paint, origami paper, scissors, glue, a toilet paper roll, shoji paper (thin Japanese paper), and pipe cleaners.
The steps are simple.
First, glue the origami paper onto the toilet paper roll.
Next, fold the shoji paper into a small bundle.
Dip the folded paper into paint in your favorite colors to dye it.
Once the dyed paper is completely dry, wrap it around the toilet paper roll.
Tie one end with a pipe cleaner, put the treats in from the other side, then tie that side with a pipe cleaner too—and you’re done! Decorating it cutely is also recommended.
Bleeding leaf art with coffee filters

October is the season of falling leaves! Here’s a leaf craft recommended for three-year-olds.
You’ll need coffee filters, washable markers, a spray bottle, and scissors.
First, color the coffee filter with the washable markers.
Then mist it with the spray bottle so the colors blend together.
Once the colors have blended, let it dry thoroughly, then cut it into the shape of a fallen leaf to finish.
If you collect leaves with the children in a park or playground beforehand, it may help them picture the craft as they make it.
It’s also a great idea to glue the finished leaves onto construction paper to make individual artworks!
Grapes made with toilet paper rolls

Here’s a grape craft that’s perfect for the fall season and fun for 3-year-olds to make! You can create three-dimensional grapes using origami.
The materials are origami paper, two toilet paper rolls, construction paper, glue stick, scissors, liquid glue, double-sided tape, and crayons.
First, gently flatten the two toilet paper rolls and cut each into three equal rings.
Use double-sided tape to join the rings together in the shape of a grape cluster.
Next, cut a circle out of construction paper, draw patterns on it with crayons, apply liquid glue to the toilet paper rings, and stick them onto the construction paper.
Crumple pieces of origami paper into balls and stuff them inside the rings, then cut a branch shape from construction paper, apply glue, and attach it to the grapes to finish.
It’s a simple and cute craft—enjoy making it with the kids!
