Popular Worldwide! Trivia & Fun Facts About ONE PIECE (1–10)
July 22 is “One Piece Day.”
The serialization of ONE PIECE in Weekly Shonen Jump began on July 22, 1997.
In connection with that, July 22 has been officially recognized as ONE PIECE Day.
It was established around the 20th anniversary of the series with the aim of spreading the work’s appeal to even more people.
Since the series began on this day, it marks the start of everything—a truly important anniversary that heralded the opening of a legend.
Illustrations are sometimes released to commemorate the day, so it’s also worth looking forward to those.
The three admirals’ epithets—Akainu, Kizaru, and Aokiji—are derived from the animals that accompany Momotaro.
Sakazuki, known as Akainu, Borsalino, known as Kizaru, and Kuzan, known as Aokiji, each appear as formidable opponents among the Navy admirals.
Many of you may have found yourselves thinking, “How could anyone beat them?” The animals in their epithets are dog, monkey, and pheasant—these are the three animals from the well-known folktale Momotaro.
It seems the admirals’ epithets are composed of a color and an animal, and later admirals like Issho’s “Fujitora” (Wisteria Tiger) and Aramaki’s “Ryokugyu” (Green Bull) also follow this pattern.
Hancock’s name comes from the man who loved rubber more than anyone in the world.
Boa Hancock, the only female among the Seven Warlords of the Sea, is a character of stunning beauty and imposing demeanor who wields the power of the Mero Mero no Mi.
As the story progresses, Hancock falls in love with Luffy, and there’s a rumor that this ties into her name’s origin.
That’s because, in our history, the first person to invent technology for working with rubber was named Thomas Hancock.
Known as the “father of rubber,” Thomas Hancock and Boa Hancock, who loved the wielder of the Gum-Gum Fruit… While Oda-sensei hasn’t stated this outright, it’s likely not a coincidence.
Luffy’s palm has a ‘masukake line’ (a single transverse crease).
The “masukake line” is a palmistry line where the heart line and head line are connected, and it’s also called the “sign of conquering the realm.” In history, figures like Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu had it; in modern times, entertainer Sanma Akashiya and baseball player Ichiro are said to have it as well.
And joining that list is Luffy, apparently.
Oda-sensei says this was just a coincidence, but according to fortune-teller Shuhei Shimada, Luffy’s life lines have increased after the two-year timeskip, which in that sense also suggests an aspect of “seizing the world.” Incidentally, when drawing Luffy’s palm lines, Oda-sensei reportedly uses his own palm as a reference.
The voice actors who play the Straw Hat Crew are nicknamed ‘Sokotsuya’ (the Clumsy Shop).
Among the Straw Hat crew, the voice actors for Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are known by the nickname “Sokotsuya.” This is a name used in the credits when these main cast voice actors appear in episodes where their own characters don’t show up and they instead play minor roles.
Each “Sokotsuya” has a sort of branch name attached, like a store location: Mayumi Tanaka, who voices Luffy, is Sokotsuya Hamadayama Branch; Kazuya Nakai, who voices Zoro, is Sokotsuya Nishi-Kobe Branch.
The name was originally started by Hiroaki Hirata, who voices Sanji, so he is Sokotsuya Main Store.
