Popular Worldwide! Trivia & Fun Facts About ONE PIECE (11–20)
Sanji holds a lollipop in his mouth in the U.S. version of the One Piece anime.
When you think of Sanji, his image with a cigarette in his mouth is striking, but in the version of One Piece broadcast in the United States, he’s actually shown with a lollipop! This change was made out of concern that scenes of him smoking could have a negative influence on children.
Regulations on content are stricter than in Japan, and measures like this are taken to prevent kids from imitating what they see.
Due to such regulations, not only Sanji’s cigarette but various other scenes have also been altered.
“Luffy” has the meaning of “to head the bow into the wind.”
It’s said to come from “luff,” which means to spread a ship’s sails and head upwind.
It’s a perfect name for a protagonist embarking on grand adventures across the open sea, isn’t it? This information was printed in the special magazine “OnePara,” published to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series.
According to Oda-sensei, some readers even noticed the origin and sent in letters about it.
Still… the level of craftsmanship, even down to a single character name, is incredible.
Details like this really show just how vast the world of One Piece is.
The members of the Worst Generation were completed in three hours.
The group known as the “Worst Generation” refers to pirates with bounties exceeding 100 million berries.
There are 12 members, but astonishingly, 9 of them were created in just three hours! Three hours after author Eiichiro Oda exchanged notes with his editor about the story, the designs and names for nine characters arrived—a truly miraculous turn of events.
These nine, plus Luffy, Zoro, and Marshall D.
Teach—better known as Blackbeard—make up the 12 members of the Worst Generation.
The names of the members of the Seven Warlords of the Sea have animals hidden in them.
The Seven Warlords of the Sea, known as the Shichibukai, are a group of seven pirates.
Members include Dracule Mihawk, Donquixote Doflamingo, and Boa Hancock, and all of their names contain animal references.
Mihawk refers to a hawk, Doflamingo to a flamingo, and Hancock’s “Boa” means a snake.
The Shichibukai’s lineup has changed several times, and later additions also follow this pattern: Trafalgar Law/Baggy (Buggy) includes “tiger” (tora) and Edward Weevil includes “bull,” meaning their names also incorporate animals.
The first person to voice Luffy was Rei Takano.
In the anime One Piece, when it comes to the voice of the protagonist Monkey D.
Luffy, we immediately think of Mayumi Tanaka.
She has played the role consistently since the series began airing in 1999 and is known as an indispensable voice for discussing Mayumi Tanaka’s career.
However, she was not the first person to voice Luffy.
At the Jump Super Anime Tour ’98, an anime titled One Piece: Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack was screened, in which Luffy was voiced by Rei Sakuma (credited as Rei Takano).
Other main characters were also played by different actors than the ones we know today.
Because the show has been on the air for so long and those voices have become so iconic, listening to the earlier, different voices can be interesting from a historical perspective.
