A masterpiece by ORIGINAL LOVE. A popular song that shines with a cool, stylish mood.

ORIGINAL LOVE started activities in 1986 and made their major debut in 1991.

They began as a band, but in 1995 it became Takao Tajima’s solo project.

Many people may have discovered them through drama theme songs or music programs.

Their pleasant grooves, rooted in rock numbers with shades of jazz and blues, will wrap your ears in happiness.

Of course, their signature song Kiss (Setsun) is a standout, but there are also funk tracks and a unique coolness and stylish atmosphere that only Tajima’s sound can create—it’s just the best!

Romantic-leaning songs like Let’s Meet on the Dark Side of the Moon are also wonderful.

When he feels stuck, it seems that running brings him new ideas for composing…!

Please enjoy the many timeless, cool classics of ORIGINAL LOVE forever!

You can practically picture a passionate, romantic love story unfolding between two people spending a long night alone together.

Takao Tajima’s sweet, soulful vocals convey such aching affection that it makes your heart swell.

Released in November 1993 as their fifth single, the song was produced as the theme for the NTV drama “Otona no Kiss” (Adult’s Kiss).

This is a track from the 4th album, “Kaze no Uta wo Kike” (Hear the Wind Sing).

With a simple rhythm reminiscent of Southern U.S.

R&B, it makes your body start dancing almost on its own.

It’s still performed frequently at live shows.

At a certain stylish junior high school, it was once sung as a choir piece, and a video of that performance was uploaded online.

Tajima himself is said to have seen the video.

It’s included as the second track on the 4th album, “Kaze no Uta o Kike” (“Hear the Wind Sing”).

Tajima sings the whole thing in falsetto à la Curtis Mayfield.

The promotional video is really cool—he’s wearing a long black leather coat, singing as he walks through what looks like an American city or some other foreign streetscape.

This is a classic that opens the 5th album, RAINBOW RACE, released after moving to Pony Canyon.

The guitar from the intro into the first verse is incredibly bluesy, then the drums kick in and it just sounds insanely cool.

It makes you want to shout, “I gotta be free!”

It’s a classic song that’s also on the indie release.

On the indie version, this track was placed first, but in the re-release album, some of the lyrics were changed and the track order was moved so it appears last.

Apparently, there was something about it that had been bothering Tajima ever since the indie release, and he was finally able to make the changes at the time of the re-release.

Included on the second album “Kesshō” (Crystal), this track overflows with a jazzy vibe right from the intro.

ORIGINAL LOVE’s songs exude respect for a wide range of genres, often giving you the sense you’ve heard them somewhere before, and this piece is one of those.

When it was performed at a solo soul show in the past, there was a stunning display of technique: the bass line was played on acoustic guitar, looped, and sung over—an absolute goosebump moment.

ScandalORIGINAL LOVE

Since their major debut in 1991, they have been a highly popular artist in J-pop influenced by rock, soul, blues, and funk.

Overall, you can strongly feel the influence of 1970s Black music, and their most famous song, “Kiss,” is a masterpiece that could be called a classic of soulful J-pop.

On the other hand, “Scandal” features a throbbing bassline that gets your hips moving before you know it—truly danceable funk music.

It’s amazing that they can do all of this in Japanese, too!
