BOØWY is a legendary rock band that was formed around Kyosuke Himuro and Tomoyasu Hotei, and was active in the 1980s.

Despite their short period of activity and the fact that they disbanded at the height of their popularity, they continue to be loved by fans.

Here, we’ll introduce their popular songs in a ranked list.

1994 -LABEL OF COMPLEX-BOØWY29rank/position

This song, with its strikingly mysterious wordplay, came out in 1994, when you couldn’t search the internet; I looked up the foreign words in a dictionary, but the mystery only deepened.

Also, Kōji Kikkawa’s participation in the chorus is intriguing as part of the path leading up to COMPLEX.

This is a slow-tempo ballad focused on vocals, included on the fifth album, BEAT EMOTION.

The powerful, beautiful singing is of course wonderful, but the guitar solo in this song also once again showcases just how amazing Hotei is.

The song was originally composed during the time when Himuro, Matsui, and Atsushi Morohoshi—who later left the group—were in a band called Despenalty during their high school days.

Although the composition is credited to Himuro, during their first live performance at Shibuya Kokaido, Himuro said in the MC that it was “a song I made with Morohoshi.”

RAIN IN MY HEARTBOØWY32rank/position

Song: BOØWY – RAIN IN MY HEART
RAIN IN MY HEARTBOØWY

It’s a medium-tempo song with a lively rhythm and crisp, cutting guitar that feels great to listen to, included on the fifth album, BEAT EMOTION.

Unusually, the lyrics were written by bassist Tsunematsu Matsui.

RATSBOØWY33rank/position

A song from the era when they were still writing their name as “Bōi” in kanji for “Bowie.” It kicks off with a sprightly rhythm and riff, but the lyrics sung there are thorny—like spitting in disgust after suffering and agonizing over heartless human relationships.

The gimmick where they deliberately drop into silence midway is brilliant, too.

Jealousy on the lipsBOØWY34rank/position

This song, with its strikingly bouncy bass riff, features lyrics like a page from the folly of youth, yearning for a fleeting life, evoking the blue-tinted adolescence everyone goes through.

The detailed descriptions are so vivid it feels as if they’re showing us cherished photographs they keep tucked away in their hearts.

BLUE VACATIONBOØWY35rank/position

This song, which starts with a xylophone-like sound in the recording, features experimental developments and production—at times reducing to just noisy guitar and drums—while never compromising its core as straightforward rock.

At live shows, the chorus turns into a massive sing-along.
