A medium-tempo number marked by a sweet, bittersweet groove that gently nestles into a quiet night.

It’s a track by the Tokyo-based band cero, known for their contemporary exotica sensibility, included on the 2014 single “Orphans / Yasa.” Written for the first time by guitarist Tsubasa Hashimoto, the song became a pivotal piece that opened a new door to poppiness for the band.

The mellow low end rooted in Black music and the J-pop-like familiarity blend in exquisite balance, setting my heart aflutter with every listen.

It also drew attention for its music video directed by VIDEOTAPEMUSIC.

Immerse yourself in the lyrics’ worldview, which drifts between the everyday and the extraordinary, and enjoy it as a soundtrack for sleepless nights.

Their sound—drawing influences from funk, hip-hop, and a wide range of Black music—paired with bittersweet Japanese lyrics, perfectly suits a lazy summer afternoon.

It’s ideal chill-out music to play on a seaside drive with friends or a lover on your day off—highly recommended!

Like the sound of waves that ebb and flow, a somehow nostalgic yet new timbre reaches the ears.

Cero’s latest work is a richly narrative piece themed around a sea voyage and the desert.

It portrays a ship bound for an Eastern desert and the inner conflicts of its crew.

Released in May 2015, the song blends elements of jazz, soul, and rock, showcasing Cero’s uniquely distinctive soundscape.

It’s perfect for a nighttime drive or for listening alone in the quiet hours.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to step slightly away from the everyday and feel as if they’re setting off into the unknown.

A track from cero’s second album, My Lost City—a band that could well be called emblematic of the 2010s indie music scene.

It’s a fan favorite, rich with Latin influences woven into intricately interlaced harmonies.

Their music is just plain cool.

They performed together after Shingo Katori said on the TV show SMAP×SMAP that he liked cero.

At first I didn’t know their songs and wondered who they were, but once I listened, it all made sense.

Their jazz-influenced, summery classics are super stylish, with melodies that feel great to the ear, and Takashiro’s cool vocals draw you into their world.

They have tracks that pair well with a drink, songs you want to hear on a nighttime drive—it’s hit after hit from a standout artist.

It’s a song that makes you feel like you’re listening to folk music from overseas.

It’s included on the album “POLY LIFE MULTI SOUL,” released in 2018 by the Tokyo-based band cero.

The curious rhythm draws you in before you know it.

If this were playing in your room, people might think it’s pretty cool.

From the 1st album “WORLD RECORD,” released in 2011, here is “(I found It) Back Beard.” It’s a track without lyrics, built from chorus and the instrumental band.

The beat from the intro lifts your spirits and instantly draws you into the song.

The arranged live version in the video is fantastic, too!
