Ranking of Popular House and Techno Songs

The straight-ahead path of dance music: four-on-the-floor.

Known overseas as “four on the floor,” it’s considered the standard rhythm of the dance floor.

Among the most timeless forms of electronic music are house and techno.

Built primarily with synthesizers, sequencers, and samplers, these genres continue to evolve, changing shape with the times.

Since 2015, we’ve seen the rise of new scenes: comparatively mellow, modern-leaning EDM like future house; hard techno that hosts massive festivals around the world; and tech house, an extremely groovy style that bridges house and techno.

This time, we’ll introduce the most popular tracks on our site in a ranked format.

When it comes to techno musicians Japan can be proud of on the global stage, many people would immediately name Ken Ishii.

He has been active since the early 1990s, when the techno genre began to gain recognition in Japan, and there’s a well-known story that his releases on European labels spread back to Japan in a kind of reverse import.

His track “Extra,” released in 1995, is famous for its music video animation—a piece that truly showcased the quality of Japanese subculture to the world.

Mr Fingers – Can You Feel It (Trax Records 1986)
Can You Feel ItMr Fingers

The legendary Chicago house label Trax Records.

Among its catalogue, this work stands out as an especially popular classic.

Partly due to the label’s policy, countless reissues, remasters, and digital distributions have been released, which tends to obscure the original—but the first release dates back to 1986, before house music had permeated the global market.

It was the dawn of the genre.

The “ecstatic, melancholic atmosphere” that later became a benchmark for deep house traces back to this track.

A quintessential masterpiece of Chicago deep.

Halcyon On and OnOrbital8rank/position

Orbital is a British techno unit that enjoys high popularity alongside acts like Underworld, The Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy.

They’ve also gained a strong following in Japan, having performed at Fuji Rock in 2000 and 2016.

Their track “Halcyon On and On” is an upbeat remix and re-release of 1992’s “Halcyon,” but today “Halcyon On and On” is the more famous of the two.

If this song caught your interest, it’s fun to compare it with the original “Halcyon” and hear the differences!

Hallucinogen – LSD (1994)

Simon Posford, the composer known under the moniker Hallucinogen, is a figure in psychedelic trance.

While he’s renowned for crafting sharp, high-quality psytrance, he also has some darkpsy tracks.

Among them, the one I especially recommend is “LSD.” It’s a famous track, and many of you may recognize its intro.

It can be taken as a psychedelic trance piece as well, so it’s recommended for those who want a lighter, more accessible taste of darkpsy.

Panic in ParadiseX-Dream10rank/position

With the evolution of technology, Goa trance became known as psychedelic trance—designed to be trippier, with careful attention to the number of sounds and their placement.

X-Dream, born from Germany, the kingdom of techno, are masters of this kind of psychedelic trance.
