Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker, Ballet Music: Overture [Naxos Classical Curation #Comical]
Miniature Overture from The Nutcracker (ballet music)Pyotr Tchaikovsky

As the opening of the ballet The Nutcracker, this “Miniature” Overture is, true to its name, an utterly charming piece.

Cellos and double basses never appear, and the low-register woodwinds and brass sit out as well.

Scored only for middle- and high-register instruments, it’s a somewhat unusual work.

The Nutcracker tells the story of a girl who receives a nutcracker on Christmas Eve and journeys through a dream world with it.

The Miniature Overture is well known as the opener of the orchestral suite that arranges the ballet’s music for concert performance.

Since the story is set at Christmas, orchestras often perform it during the holiday season—so why not consider attending a concert?

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, First MovementPyotr Tchaikovsky25rank/position

Nobuyuki Tsujii Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 – First Movement
Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, First MovementPyotr Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky, a composer who represents Russia in the 20th century.

This piece is composed in a free form that does not adhere to the traditional concerto structure throughout.

It opens majestically, with the piano striking heavy, bell-like chords.

The playful, rhythmic melody that follows is said to be taken from a folk song heard in Ukraine.

Partway through, the mood shifts dramatically to an emotional melody, after which the piano and orchestra press forward with powerful energy in dialogue.

Be sure to listen for the grand cadenza, rich in delicate expression!

Overture “1812”Pyotr Tchaikovsky26rank/position

Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, Op. 49, TH 49
Overture "1812"Pyotr Tchaikovsky

It is the Overture 1812 composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

Written in 1880 as a concert overture, its title “1812” refers to the year of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.

In contrast to the brilliant, light strings and woodwinds, the powerful, robust unisons and harmonies of the trumpets that appear throughout make this a strikingly impressive work.

Dance of the Reed Flutes (from The Nutcracker)Pyotr Tchaikovsky27rank/position

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker – Dance of the Reed Flutes (Act II) [Naxos Classical Curations #Energetic]
Dance of the Reed Flutes (from The Nutcracker)Pyotr Tchaikovsky

This commercial conveys SoftBank’s ethos—that if you get moving, the scenery will change—through the figure of the father, who is also the mascot character.

In an unexpected twist, the father joins THE JET BOY BANGERZ’s dance, stylishly communicating the importance of taking on challenges with a touch of humor.

The track used to match the dance is “Dance of the Reed Flutes” from The Nutcracker, well known as a SoftBank CM song.

Although it’s a light piece that highlights the sound of flutes, when layered with the dance beat it comes across with a powerful rhythm.

Hiroshi Abe appears as a music teacher conducting while the students sing.

They perform a famous passage from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, singing “Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky” set to the melody.

The lyrics then continue with “Cutie Mobile Otokudashi,” invoking the name of a fictitious musician.

It’s a humorous touch that makes for a memorable commercial highlighting the value of QT Mobile.
