MERRY X’MASTHE YELLOW MONKEY22rank/position

From 1988 to the present, THE YELLOW MONKEY has produced many classic songs.

Here, we introduce their Christmas song “MERRY X’MAS.” This track, included on the album “jaguar hard pain 1944-1994,” portrays a bleak and heartrending story: two lovers who lose their will to live on Christmas night.

The arrangement, which adds more layers of sound toward the latter half, seems to mirror the rising swell of emotion.

Romantist TasteTHE YELLOW MONKEY23rank/position

It begins with a heavy drum intro that almost induces a headache, and the uniquely chosen words—worthy of being called a quintessential “Yemon style”—can only be described as impressive.

The carefully crafted visual material, brimming with a simmering sense of soul, also leaves a strong impression that glitter and fragility exist back-to-back, resulting in a truly remarkable piece.

A Kiss to MaryTHE YELLOW MONKEY24rank/position

The Yellow Monkey’s “name song” is “Kiss to Marie,” included on their 1995 album “smile.” French appears right from the beginning of the track, making it clear that Marie is French—a Parisienne.

With lyrics brimming with The Yellow Monkey’s characteristic sensuality, it offers a taste of an adult world.

In contrast to those lyrics, the melody has a fairly pop feel.

This sense of contrast gives the impression that the descent into temptation with the Parisienne is being glossed over somehow, as if the narrator is stretching to be her equal or even surpass her—and that tension adds an element of fun.

Released in 2000 as THE YELLOW MONKEY’s 20th single, a band popular across a wide range of generations.

The song was issued as a collaboration single with Hirofumi Asamoto and was used as the ending theme for TV Asahi’s “Onepu!” and as the theme song for the film “Genjitsu no Tsuzuki Yume no Owari.” Vocalist Kazuya Yoshii said he was very fond of the track and insisted on making it the first song for their comeback after a two-month hiatus.

SUCK OF LIFETHE YELLOW MONKEY26rank/position

This is a song that portrays a male homosexual.

During live performances, there’s a member introduction in the middle of the song.

There’s also interaction between guitarist Hideaki Kikuchi and vocalist Kazuya Yoshii.

It’s a song often played live and very popular with fans.

It’s one I’m excited to see after their comeback.

BRILLIANT WORLDTHE YELLOW MONKEY27rank/position

Released on November 1, 2000, just before the hiatus announcement, this is THE YELLOW MONKEY’s 23rd single.

A song of hope that conveys a strong feeling—pure and achingly poignant—toward a boundless future.

It’s a masterpiece by THE YELLOW MONKEY that makes you feel it was connected to a future that would shine again, and that this hopeful light will continue to connect from here on out.

A track where Kazuya Yoshii’s seductive vocals shine over a lively 8-beat.

It’s not exactly a universally famous song, but its catchy groove might get everyone moving.

Despite the simple melody, Yoshii’s distinctive singing style means you’ll need a bit of practice to pull it off properly.

But the sense of achievement when you nail it is absolutely incredible!
