While dance music keeps evolving, there are many tracks that continue to be strongly supported.

In this article, from a dancer’s perspective, I’ll introduce the ultimate classics—tracks that sparked huge reactions and paved the way for new foundations in dance.

If you’re interested in dance, of course, but even if you’re not, I’m sure there are songs here you’ve heard before.

If you’re unsure what music to use for practice, you can’t go wrong with these tracks—so read to the end and use them as a reference!

LOVE&GIRLSshōjo jidai

Girls’ Generation Shoujo Jidai ‘LOVE & GIRLS’ MV Dance ver.
LOVE&GIRLSshōjo jidai

This song is by Girls’ Generation, the hugely popular K-pop idol group.

The promotional video features a total of 1,000 female extras, making it incredibly powerful, and the song itself is super cute.

A distinctive feature is the “shampoo dance” in the chorus, which is very cute and easy to dance to.

SUNHoshino Gen

Gen Hoshino – SUN (Official Video)

This track is a departure from conventional dance music.

What deserves praise is that, while grounded in the rhythms of Black music, it deliberately avoids the bright, easily catchy melodies that typically pair well with those rhythms, yet still succeeds as an approachable song.

It’s a piece that really showcases his unique talent.

This song sparked a wildly popular series that is believed to have the largest market among otome games, and the reason I recommend it is that it already comes with choreography! If you watch the PV on Nico Nico, you can see it with the dance.

Feel free to copy it or create your own arrangement.

Summer, the beach, getting hyped—broadly speaking, that’s what this song is about, right? It really makes you want to listen to it in the summer.

It’s perfect as BGM for the Shonan seaside, and you’ll pretty much hear it playing whenever you’re there.

I want to spin a towel around and dance together with everyone, having a great time.

I highly recommend Just Dance Wii (a game where you dance along with the moves on the Wii screen) because it was such a hit! The unique move that looks like you’re making a fortune cookie is indescribably cute! It’s fun whether you copy it perfectly or add your own twist.

LOSERYonezu Kenshi

Dance music by Kenshi Yonezu, the most talked-about singer-songwriter in Japan right now.

He’s known for his versatile talents in singing and songwriting, but he also took on dancing in the music video for this track, which became a hot topic.

Many videos featuring people dancing to this song as background music have been uploaded as well.

SenbonzakuraKurousa-P

[Hatsune Miku] Senbonzakura [Project DIVA F]

It’s the song that needs no introduction—hugely popular around 2011 and known by everyone whether they like Vocaloid or not.

AKB covered it, and a piano arrangement of it was even used in a Toyota commercial.

The tempo is fairly steady and the drums are relatively prominent, so it should be easy to keep the rhythm.
