Classic songs about roads. Recommended popular tracks.

This is a playlist of songs with roads as the theme.

It’s fascinating to compare how artists from different eras and genres portray the road—whether it’s the way there, the way back, an uncharted path, or a highway.

Even when it’s the same “road,” each artist expresses it differently.

"This Road" Music by Kōsaku Yamada, Lyrics by Hakushū Kitahara
This roadNEW!Sakushi: Kitahara Hakushū / Sakkyoku: Yamada Kōsaku

This is a signature work by Hakushu Kitahara and Kōsaku Yamada, and it was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Songs.

The lyrics intertwine scenes such as the Sapporo Clock Tower in Hokkaido, which Kitahara visited on his travels, and the landscapes around Yanagawa in Fukuoka Prefecture, his hometown.

Published in 1927, the piece remains enduringly popular.

It also drew attention when EXILE ATSUSHI performed it as the theme song for the 2019 film “Kono Michi.” It gently evokes the inner landscapes and nostalgic memories we all carry.

I recommend listening to it with family or friends and letting it spark lively reminiscences.

CROSS ROADMr.Children

Included on the 1994 album “Atomic Heart.” Theme song for the drama “Dōsōkai” (Reunion).

A four-member band from Tokyo formed in 1985.

Sakurai wrote the song after reading only the script for the first episode of the drama, and after finishing it reportedly said, “We’ve made a song that will sell a million copies!” Even now, it remains a track worthy of being called a fine song.

Included on the 2007 album “Ah, Hello.

Nice to Meet You.” Ending theme for TBS’s “Hitachi Sekai Fushigi Hakken!” A music group from Fukushima Prefecture formed in 2002.

This song is their debut single, and I think it really brings out their strengths.

biting my lipyoshida takurou

Released as a single in 1982, this song was written specifically as the theme for the film Detective Story, starring Tetsuya Takeda.

Its lyrics, written entirely in the Hiroshima dialect, mirror the protagonist—awkward yet striving earnestly—and stir the listener’s heart.

The emotions expressed in unadorned words carry a unique warmth and melancholy that standard Japanese can’t quite capture.

The vocals, which swallow frustration and love while gazing straight ahead with quiet strength, are quintessentially Takuro Yoshida.

It’s a deeply moving masterpiece you’ll want to listen to when you stand at a crossroads in life or are grappling with feelings too complex to put into words.

Path of the Sixteenth-Night MoonLUNKHEAD

Included on the 2012 album “White Dyed in Blue.” A four-piece rock band from Ehime Prefecture formed in 1999.

With an aggressively up-tempo rhythm and a straightforward rock-style melody line, the powerful vocals cut straight through to your ears.

That’s the kind of track this is.

broad daylightKing Gnu

Released in February 2019 as the theme song for the drama “Innocence: False Accusation Lawyer,” this track portrays the fragility of humans who, often without realizing it, end up hurting others, and the regret that follows irrevocable mistakes.

It conveys a desperate wish for everything to be buried like falling snow, while also expressing the resolve to take a step toward tomorrow.

The struggle to move forward while accepting a present that is continuous with the past is brought to life through the interplay between Satoru Iguchi’s commanding high tones and Daiki Tsuneta’s deep vocals.

Debuting at No.

9 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and surpassing 500 million total streams, this work is a powerful anthem that encourages those standing at a crossroads in life or trying to take a step forward while facing their past.

Included on the 2017 album “YES.” A three-piece punk band formed in 2000.

The up-tempo, full-throttle rhythm, aggressively chugging guitar riffs, and powerful drums are seriously cool, and listening to them really stirs the soul.
