To form a band at school

“I want to perform at the school festival, so I want to form a band, but I don’t have any members!”

A lot of students probably feel this way, don’t they?

And there are likely many junior high and high schools where bands formed with students from other schools aren’t allowed to perform at the school festival.

Of course, even outside of school festivals, there are many situations where it’s more convenient if all the members attend the same school.

So this time, we’d like to share some tips on how to form a band within your school!

Time spent as a student—on studies, club activities, and more—is a precious period when you can wholeheartedly devote yourself to something.

It’s not uncommon to find that even those famous bands were actually formed back when the members were in high school.

Base Ball Bear is a rock band formed in 2002 for a high school cultural festival.

It’s captivating for its unique chord progression and lyrics that showcase the sharp sensibility of vocalist/guitarist Yusuke Koide.

YOSHIKI and Toshl, who had been childhood friends since kindergarten, were close enough by their upper elementary school years to talk about the American hard rock band KISS, and they had promised to form a band together.

It sounds like a dream that such famous bands were formed at the same high school, but it’s something that actually happened!

To form your dream band and perform at events like cultural and school festivals, you first need to gather your band members.

Form a band at schoolFirst, we need to recruit members within the school.

To that end, I'd like to first present a shortcut method this time.

Join the light music club

It’s no exaggeration to say this is the number-one reason people start a band.

It's a place where a wide range of people—from complete beginners to highly advanced players—can easily come together.

Why not be brave and try joining the club?

However, there are, in fact, some schools that prohibit electric guitars.

And at schools without a light music club, you'll need to recruit band members by other means.

Invite friends who don’t play an instrument yet

Don’t you have any friends around you who want to start playing an instrument or are interested?

When it comes to starting a musical instrument, whether you’re young or not, being early or late doesn’t matter that much.

A band with my friends and the group I usually hang out withLet's get started.

I think it would be interesting if each one became a trigger for someone to start playing an instrument.

If someone doesn’t know much about music yet, start by going with them to a nearby live house or a concert so they can develop an interest in music.

Form a band with my senior

If you can’t find anyone in your grade, try inviting an older student who plays the instrument.

If you still can’t find anyone, try posting a recruitment flyer on campus bulletin boards and the like to attract attention.

When students are in different grades, it’s only natural that their performance levels will vary.

If your senior has a high level of performance, you’ll need to work hard and keep practicing!

Form a band with the teacher

Some teachers might also play musical instruments as a hobby, you know.

Conversely, the faculty advisor of the light music club isn’t necessarily able to play an instrument.

Thoroughly check the teachers’ information and try inviting them!

Collaborate with the brass band club

Of course, jumping straight into a performance collaboration would probably be quite a high hurdle...

I imagine there are quite a few people in the concert band who have gathered because they like instruments and music.

Especially when you think, “I can’t find a drum!”, why not be brave and visit the wind ensemble’s classroom?

Find a local net idol

They don’t give off any vibe of being a musician in everyday life, but in the online world they’re a guitar virtuoso!?

We’re entering an era where things like this can happen!

If you see a performance or cover video and think, “Could that be ○○-kun?”, why not try reaching out to them once?

Lastly

Maybe there are bands out there looking for members for parts other than my own!

To make it easier for someone to find you, how about starting by bringing your instrument to school?

Let's start little by little with what we can do first.
