Winters in Hokkaido are extremely cold, and some of the nation’s lowest temperatures are recorded there. Among its regions, the Kamikawa area in central Hokkaido is especially known for its severe cold.

In Hokkaido, despite being a cold region, the ownership rate of kotatsu is very low, ranking 46th in Japan. This is because households in Hokkaido have well-developed heating systems that warm entire rooms with stoves, reducing the need for kotatsu, which provide localized warmth. Incidentally, Okinawa ranks 47th.

In Hokkaido, “yakitori” doesn’t mean grilled chicken skewers; it refers to grilled pork skewers. This is one of the regional differences from other parts of Japan and may come as a surprise to visitors from outside Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the only region in Japan that does not have a rainy season. While most parts of Japan experience the rainy season from June to July, Hokkaido does not have a special rainy season during this period. Moreover, even in Hokkaido—known for its harsh winter cold—there are scorching hot days in summer when the high temperature exceeds 35°C.

Long-tailed tit (Shima-enaga)

The long-tailed tit is a small bird that lives only in Hokkaido. Its pure white plumage blends into the winter snow, making it look like a snow fairy—hence its nickname. In recent years, it has gained attention as a mascot character, and goods featuring long-tailed tit designs have become popular.

Wakkanai City

The northernmost city in Japan is Wakkanai. Wakkanai is located at the northern tip of Hokkaido and is characterized by a cool climate. In Cape Soya within Wakkanai, there is a monument marking the northernmost point of Japan.

gyoza

In Hokkaido, there’s a custom of eating curry topped with gyoza. A popular local chain called “Miyoshino” serves a menu item called gyoza curry. This unique combination is a local favorite, so be sure to try it when you visit Hokkaido.
