Ogre's Washboard

The terraced rock formations along the coastline, stretching about 8 kilometers from Aoshima in Miyazaki City to Kinchakushima to the south, are known as the “Devil’s Washboard.” Owing to their unique shape, they have been designated a natural monument. Resembling a washboard, these rocks are one of the iconic spots symbolizing the natural wonders of Miyazaki.

Hyuganatsu

Hyuganatsu is a citrus fruit native to Miyazaki Prefecture, with its peak season in early spring. Nurtured by Miyazaki’s warm climate and abundant nature, it has a distinctive balance of sweetness and acidity. The peel is slightly thick, while the inner flesh is very juicy. Known for its refreshing aroma, it is often enjoyed fresh, and is also processed into products such as juice and jam.

“Taiyo no Tamago” refers to mangoes that are a specialty of Miyazaki Prefecture. With its warm climate, Miyazaki boasts the highest mango production in Japan, and particularly high-quality mangoes are popularly known under the brand name “Taiyo no Tamago” (Egg of the Sun). In summer, they are loved by many people for their sweetness and juiciness.

Chicken nanban is a local specialty of Miyazaki Prefecture. It features chicken that’s fried until crispy, then marinated in a sweet-and-sour nanban sauce, and finished with a generous topping of homemade tartar sauce. The exquisite combination of sweet-and-sour tang, creaminess, and the chicken’s crunch makes it hugely popular with both locals and visitors.
