[For Seniors] Enjoyable September Event Activities
September is a season with various events such as Otsukimi (moon viewing), Respect-for-the-Aged gatherings, and the Autumnal Equinox Day.
In senior care facilities and day services, it’s recommended to incorporate these events as caregiving recreation activities.
Experiencing the seasons through events can help invigorate both mind and body.
It’s also a good idea to include seasonal items unique to September in your activities to enhance the sense of the season.
When staff lead the recreation, try starting with a question like, “What comes to mind when you think of September?”
This question format stimulates imagination and provides positive cognitive stimulation for older adults.

[For Seniors] September Events and Activities to Enjoy (1–10)
Sports day activity

With autumn being the season for sports, many facilities may be planning to hold sports days.
Even if you don’t go as far as a full sports day, how about incorporating common athletic-meet-style games as recreational activities to get people moving? For example, a baton relay where each team lines up in a single file, passes the baton backward down the line, and once it reaches the last person, passes it forward using the opposite hand; or tamaire, where participants sit in a circle with a box in the center and toss balls into it.
Let’s capture the spirit of a sports day with these lively activities and get everyone excited!
Moon-viewing game

One of the events that comes to mind in September is the moon-viewing festival on the night of the full moon.
Let’s get excited with a game inspired by this moon-viewing! Place a sanpō (the three-sided wooden stand for moon-viewing dumplings) in the center, and see how many round objects, representing dumplings, you can stack on top.
The team that stacks the most wins.
Lay the newspaper sheets flat, pick them up, scrunch them tightly into balls, and stack them.
In addition to newspaper balls, try combining various round items like rubber balls or beanbags.
It works perfectly as a team competition where everyone cooperates, but it’s also fun as an individual contest.
Funny gymnastics

In autumn, when it starts to cool down, many people—regardless of age—suddenly feel the accumulated fatigue from summer and end up not feeling well.
To prevent that, it’s best to make exercise a steady part of your daily routine.
Even if you find working out a hassle, if it’s fun, you’ll want to do it, right? So let’s liven things up with a cheerful exercise that keeps everyone laughing! It’s just clapping along, but this routine always brings out laughter.
Laughing is important for health too—so let’s all move our bodies and give it a try with smiles and laughter!

Ohagi making

September has lots of enjoyable events like Respect for the Aged Day and moon viewing, doesn’t it? So how about enjoying a recreation activity of making ohagi in connection with the autumn equinox? The steps are: steam the glutinous rice, simmer the azuki beans, then shape the rice balls and coat them with kinako or sweet red bean paste to finish.
It’s easy if you cook the glutinous rice in a rice cooker.
Through the series of tasks, you can enjoy chatting while also stimulating body and mind.
Let’s gather around the ohagi we make together and enjoy them deliciously.
The smiles and conversations from that time will surely become happy memories.
Making moon-viewing dumplings

The big event in September is Otsukimi, the moon-viewing festival.
How about making essential moon-viewing dumplings as a snack activity? Usually you knead dumpling flour or shiratama rice flour with water, but using tofu makes the texture smoother and helps keep them from hardening even after they cool—perfect for older adults.
Roll the dough into small bite-sized balls and press a slight indentation in the center so they cook through more easily.
Drop them into boiling water, and once they float to the surface, transfer them to cold water to cool.
Drain well and serve with your choice of toppings, such as sweet red bean paste or a sweet soy glaze.
Bingo game

At events, the classic bingo game is a staple.
For occasions like seniors’ gatherings, try making it extra special with a slightly more luxurious selection of prizes! After all, the prospect of winning something is exciting at any age—not just for kids, but for adults too.
You don’t have to use store-bought bingo cards; handmade ones can be just as fun, and you can make them larger and easier to read.
Searching for the numbers is a mental exercise and works well as brain training.
Everyone will get enthusiastic—maybe you’ll even find yourself calling out numbers louder than usual!
Red spider lily papercraft

Around the time of the equinox, you can see cluster amaryllis blooming here and there.
Also known as manjushage, they are most commonly red, but you occasionally see white ones too.
Both are very beautiful, with delicately shaped petals.
If you make these flowers using tissue paper, you can create stunningly realistic, luxurious blooms.
Cut construction paper into long, thin strips and curl the tips to form the outer parts, and use accordion-folded tissue paper to make the inner petals.
Use a green straw as the stem and secure it with cellophane tape.
Make plenty, and you’ll have a very impressive, lavish bouquet.
