She is best known for playing Tora-san’s younger sister in the “It’s Tough Being a Man” (Otoko wa Tsurai yo) film series.

She graduated at the top of her class from the Shochiku Music and Dance School and made her film debut in 1961 with “Madwoman.” Since then, she has appeared in numerous films, winning many Japan Academy Film Prizes, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

In 2022, she voiced Sophie and performed the theme song for Studio Ghibli’s “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and her starring role in the film “PLAN 75” generated significant acclaim.
