[Funny] A compilation of videos themed around silence [Art]
A while back, there was a trend on video sites where people would watch with the audio muted.
Just doing that can make even the coolest visuals feel surreal—and somehow, you end up laughing.
It made me realize how important sound really is.
Anyway, this article compiles videos that focus on “silence.”
You might be thinking, “What does that even mean?” But seeing is believing—please check out the videos featured here.
Audio is inseparable from moving images, which is exactly why there are art pieces that take silence as their theme.
Of course, there are also videos that are simply laugh-out-loud funny.

4 minutes 33 seconds

This is a piece in which no music is played for 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
The performer, dressed in a rather imposing manner, sits before a grand piano, closing the lid, timing the silence with a stopwatch, and then opening the lid after a set interval—repeating this sequence.
For audience members hearing the piece for the first time, they will watch with bated breath to see what will happen.
At this point, the performer’s qualities as an actor also come into question.
You could say it lies somewhere between music and theater.
LISTEN Rissun

A trailer for the artistic film “LISTEN,” which expresses music during 58 minutes of complete silence—without sound effects or any ambient sound.
Released in 2016, the film features deaf performers who use their own bodies to convey “music.” You might be surprised at first by imagery created without relying on the myriad sounds that fill our world.
But as you watch, don’t you start to hear the music emerge from each performer’s movements and expressions? Perhaps this film is completed through the performers’ physicality and the viewer’s imagination.
Be sure to watch the feature in a quiet environment and let your imagination run at full throttle!
[Silent Dance] Can we dance separately and still sync up?!

Daichi Miura’s “silent dance,” which he performed on a music show and sparked a buzz, has now been attempted by the popular Johnny’s group HiHi Jets! But instead of dancing all together in sync, each member dances separately and on their own.
It’s a terrifying concept that reveals just how accurate each person’s internal clock really is! They play only the intro of the song and cut the sound right before the vocals come in, and from there the members start dancing in complete silence.
The individually recorded videos are then combined and watched alongside the music and the original choreography.
Although it seems to go smoothly at first, at the start of the first verse and the chorus they all tend to jump ahead of the beat a little, and it’s hard for everyone to line up perfectly… It turns out that even with a song you’ve danced many times, performing it in silence is really difficult! If you’re in a dance club or team, why not give it a try?

If you’re a quiz king, you can still get the right answer even when the question is only lip-synced.

If you’re a quiz whiz, couldn’t you answer questions even if they’re just lip-synced with no sound? Taking on this astonishing challenge were the members of QuizKnock, led by CEO Takuji Izawa, who has appeared on numerous quiz shows.
You’d think that even the well-read folks at QuizKnock would struggle with lip-reading, right? But there’s no need to worry—they keep nailing the answers one after another, at the same lightning-fast speed as in buzzer rounds, and it’s absolutely overwhelming to watch.
It’s so smooth I’d love to see a TV show try this format! If you’re a fan of quizzes, why not give it a shot yourself?
Silent PV Video Work “Untitled”

In a black-and-white video, a man walks along the beach, sings, and even shows a slightly sexy side in a strange, silent clip.
Created by the visual comedian 84, this piece is titled “Silent PV Work ‘Untitled’” and is offered as a silent video available as free stock footage.
Because there’s no audio, you can enjoy it in various ways—add an original song to match the visuals, record a voice-over, and more.
It could also be great for practicing how to combine video and audio! Since the video’s title is also “Untitled,” you’re free to choose your own title as well.
What is the musician Naokiya, who appears in the video, singing, saying, or trying to convey? Let your imagination run wild and create your own unique original video!

It runs for a full 12 hours, so it’s perfect as a screensaver or a welcome monitor.
JIDAI / Rich sound played in silence

In this performance by mime artist JIDAI, various sounds are expressed in complete silence.
It features surreal yet comical choreography.
Depending on the listener’s imagination, all kinds of sounds should come to mind—perhaps a gentle breeze, a frog’s croak, or the splash of water.
Our ears are accustomed to countless everyday sounds.
At first, being unable to hear these vital sources of information feels disorienting, but as you watch the video, you may strangely start to feel as if you can hear many different sounds.
It could also be a good thing to “listen” to during study breaks to boost your concentration.
