[Easy] Let’s make a snake with origami! A toy you can play with and a zodiac decoration

There are surprisingly many snake toys for kids, aren’t there?

Lots of children find the wiggly, mysterious movements and unexpectedly quick speed fascinating.

In this article, I’ll introduce paper-folding (origami) snake ideas.

I’ve gathered simple ideas that kids can make, so feel free to copy them and give them a try.

There are all kinds—from toys you can play with to decorations for the Year of the Snake.

Since some snakes are venomous, be careful not to touch real ones.

Colorful snake

Here’s how to fold a snake from a single sheet of origami paper.

It looks cute in different colors! First, fold the paper into a triangle to make a crease, then unfold it and fold the top and bottom corners toward the center.

Fold those flaps back outward, turn the paper over, and fold the top and bottom edges to the center.

Fold the paper in half along the middle line, and you’ve got the snake’s long, thin body! Next, shape the head and tail on the left and right, and make it stand by doing inside reverse folds on the head and body.

Create the head with a squash fold, and for the tail, tuck in the corners so the tip becomes pointy, then do an inside reverse fold.

Add eyes or a tongue to finish it cutely!

Patterned snake

Introducing a cute snake idea with a triangular pattern! First, fold the top and bottom corners of the origami toward the center.

Roll-fold it, then repeat the same folding two more times on each side.

Open the paper, and using the creases you just made, accordion-fold the whole sheet.

This will bring out the triangular pattern.

On the now long, narrow strip, make a cover fold on one side to separate the snake’s neck and body, then use another cover fold to form the head.

Inside-reverse-fold the tip to refine the shape.

Finally, match the opposite tip to the head and accordion-fold it, then add the mouth and eye pieces to finish!

[Origami Toy] Cut, paste, and make it! A Moving Snake

Here’s how to make a simple jumping snake.

Materials: two sheets of colored paper, glue, and parts for the face, eyes, and mouth.

First, cut both long sheets of colored paper into eight strips.

Glue one strip of each color together at a right angle so they’re perpendicular.

Fold them over each other alternately.

Attach the face first, then add the eye and mouth parts to complete the snake! You can make it even more fun by using round stickers for the eyes or drawing them with a pen.

If you add more paper strips and glue them together, you can make a longer snake too.

Fold the top and bottom corners to the center line, then fold the corners back to align with the outer edges.

Turn it over and fold both sides toward the center line.

Fold one corner inward, then fold the whole piece in half so the colored side is on the outside.

On one side, perform a squash fold by bringing the lower edge to the center.

Next, make another squash fold at the tip to shape the head.

Finally, wrap the tip on the other end around your finger to curl it, and you’re done.

Add your favorite decorations to boost its good-luck charm even more!

Super easy with just one sheet of origami! Here’s how to make a wiggly, bendable snake toy.

You’ll need one sheet of double-sided origami paper, wood glue, and a piece of wire.

Fold one corner of the origami paper inward, then apply a line of wood glue down the center.

Place the wire on top of the glue, and fold the near corner so it meets just short of the opposite corner.

Finally, roll the paper from the near edge toward the wire, and secure the tip with wood glue.

Flatten one end to shape the snake’s head, attach the mouth piece, and you’re done!

Here’s an origami snake that’s perfect for New Year’s and can also be used on cards! First, fold the paper into a triangle twice to make crease lines.

Place the paper with a corner facing you, then fold the two edges closest to you in toward the horizontal center line.

Open up the overlapped center section and squash-fold it, while folding each edge inward toward the overlapped area.

Tuck one side’s edge to the back, then shape it so the corners are rounded to resemble a snake.

The remaining side will be the snake’s tail, so fold it back so it sticks out on the reverse side.

Finally, draw the eyes and add letters or patterns on the white areas, and you’re done!

A cute snake with googly eyes stickers

Introducing an easy snake origami you can make with just one sheet of origami paper and googly-eye stickers! Up to a certain point, the folding is the same as when making a crane.

Once you’ve folded it to the stage where the crane’s head, tail, and two wings are formed, accordion-fold either the head or the tail to make the snake’s tail, and use one of the wings to form the head.

Cut two small slits in the lower triangular tip of the wing to create the snake’s tongue.

Tuck any excess paper to the back of the head, add the eye stickers, and you’re done! For the eyes, you can also use round stickers or draw them with a pen—they look cute that way too.
