Last updated:

There are surprisingly many snake toys for kids, aren’t there?

Lots of children find the wiggly, mysterious movements and unexpectedly quick speed fascinating.

In this article, I’ll introduce paper-folding (origami) snake ideas.

I’ve gathered simple ideas that kids can make, so feel free to copy them and give them a try.

There are all kinds—from toys you can play with to decorations for the Year of the Snake.

Since some snakes are venomous, be careful not to touch real ones.

Wiggly and fun! Here’s how to fold a tube-like snake.

Prepare about 30 sheets of origami paper.

First, fold a sheet in half into a square, then fold both top corners down to meet at the center.

Only fold the top layer.

Flip the paper over, and now fold the bottom corner up.

Slip your fingers into the gap between the square and the triangle, open it up, and collapse it into a shape like a cat-ear hat.

Place the paper so the triangle with the connected corners is on the left, then fold both right-side corners inward to crease them and unfold.

Make as many of these units as you need, and combine them to complete a wiggly snake!

I’ll show you how to make a cute snake using just one sheet of origami paper.

First, fold the paper in half twice to make a square divided into four sections, then cut off one of the quarters.

Fold the quarter sheet using the “zabuton” (cushion) fold, and tuck each of the four corners slightly inward.

That completes the snake’s head.

Next, use the remaining paper to make the snake’s body and tail.

Fold the part that’s still full-sized into the tail, and use the rest for the body.

It looks cute if you fold the body so the snake’s belly is white.

Make the tip of the tail pointy.

Draw a face on the head piece, attach it to the body, and you’re done!

I’ll show you how to fold a jack-in-the-box snake toy using a single sheet of origami paper! First, crease the paper so it’s divided into an 8-square grid both vertically and horizontally.

Fold it in half into a square, then fold one side into a box shape.

Next, make inside reverse folds on both corners of the opposite side to create the snake’s mouth.

Accordion-fold the remaining section and tuck it into the box to finish! If you press the snake’s head into the box with your finger and then release, the snake will pop out of the box! Adding a face with round stickers or a pen makes it extra cute, so I recommend it.

A snake that can open and close its mouth

Here’s a simple origami snake with an opening mouth.

First, fold the paper into a triangle to make a crease.

Then fold the adjacent edges in to meet the crease.

Fold the other edges the same way, and fold the remaining corner down toward the center of the paper.

To form the snake’s head, tuck the edges inward so that the center of the folded-down section becomes a diamond shape.

Next, shape the rest into the snake’s body and tail.

Accordion-fold the body to give it a snakelike look.

The diamond-shaped section you made will be the snake’s mouth, so add a tongue there to make it cute!

Here’s how to make a jumping snake origami toy.

First, fold the top and bottom corners of the paper toward the center, then fold again as if you’re rolling it up.

Fold both edges on the right inward to make it narrower and form the tail.

Next, fold the opposite corner to align with the center crease to make a guideline, then perform an inside reverse fold to create the snake’s head.

After that, accordion-fold the body, draw the eyes and patterns, and you’re done! Press it down with your finger and release to make it jump.

You can also add a tongue if you like.

I’ll show you how to make a fun rolling snake origami toy.

First, fold the paper into a triangle twice to make crease lines, then open it.

Roll-fold the top and bottom corners toward the center three times.

Fold the paper in half along the center line, open it, then make a flap fold on the right edge to form the head.

On the opposite end, fold it up imagining triangular shapes to create a spiral, then gently stretch it out and add eyes with round stickers or a pen to finish.

It’s fun to roll it down a slope and play!

Chiikawa snake

A big hit with kids! Here’s how to make a cute Chiikawa snake.

Prepare one sheet of origami paper, a Chiikawa face made from construction paper, and small patterned pieces to stick on the body.

First, cut the origami paper in half.

Use one half to make the head.

Fold it in half horizontally, fold the corners, and shape it into a face.

Glue on the Chiikawa face parts.

Next, use the other half to make the body.

Fold the paper into a long, narrow strip, then accordion-fold the lower part on one side to resemble a snake’s tail.

On the opposite end from the tail, glue the patterned pieces for the body, attach the head, and you’re done!
