Muscle, my friendUchikubi Gokumon Doukoukai

Sung with feverish passion: muscles.

It’s a track by the three-piece rock band Uchikubi Gokumon Doukoukai, included on their ninth album released in 2020.

Their signature powerful, hard-hitting style really fires you up! And, true to the title, the lyrics themed around strength training are super unique.

The catchy melody is almost infuriatingly good, right? The explosive chorus sends your excitement soaring! Is this sound arrangement exactly what it means for “muscles to rejoice”? Perfect companion for your workouts!

Full Power☆Summer!angela

As you can imagine from the title, it’s an upbeat banger! The track is by the musical duo angela, released in 2017 as their 26th single.

It was used as the opening theme for the anime Aho-Girl, based on the manga by Hiroyuki.

Although it’s a feel-good summer song, some of you might wonder why it’s being introduced as a “song that makes you laugh.” The truth is, angela has released many cool, serious works, so people who’ve known them for a long time are surprised by the contrast.

That said, songs like this are great too!

RIVER when you don’t have timeyonseikyu

RIVER when you don't have timeyonseikyu

With briefs and happi coats as their trademark, you could call Su-xing-cyu (Shikoshikku/Four Star Ball) one of Japan’s representative comic bands.

Their song “RIVER for When You Don’t Have Time” is astonishingly short at just 10 seconds.

It originated from 10-FEET’s must-play live and festival anthem “RIVER,” and they sing only two bars of it.

Su-xing-cyu performed this on the stage of Kyoto Daisakusen, the summer festival hosted by 10-FEET, and then the original band 10-FEET also closed with those two bars, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

It’s an easy-to-copy, guaranteed-to-hype track (lol).

You want to tell someone from overseas that they’re making a mistake, but you can’t because you don’t speak English… Maybe you’ve had that experience too.

This song, performed by the talent unit The Students, is a piece born from the variety show “Sanma’s Super Karakuri TV.” How would you tell someone who’s eating food meant for pigeons…? Imagining the situation makes you think, “What would I do?”

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chanChiba Saeko

With its super pop melody, cute vocals, and lyrics with the attack power cranked to the max… that’s this song.

It’s the opening theme of the anime “Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan,” sung by Saeko Chiba, who plays Dokuro-chan.

Above all, that opening phrase—hear it once and it’ll stick in your head.

When you want music to completely fill your brain, this is as good as it gets.

If you like denpa songs, make sure to keep this one on your list!

demonakanekana

A song that makes you go “Ahh—I was fooled, but that was fun!” is Nakane Kana’s ‘demo.’ If you thought, “Does ‘demo’ mean an unfinished demo track?” you’ve already fallen right into Nakane Kana’s trap.

Spoiler alert: in this case, ‘demo’ means the conjunction ‘demo’—as in ‘but’ in Japanese.

The lyrics spin a comical tale: “A beautiful sea, a refreshing breeze, an iced coffee, and my beloved car that feels like it’s embracing me—there’s no better drive than this, but… I don’t have a driver’s license.” The song is so good you barely notice how absurd the lyrics are—what a curious track.

The natural swing that gets your body moving is a joy, too!

Released in 2003 and a massive hit, Ai Otsuka’s track “Sakuranbo.” This is a cover version by the mixture rock band Omedetai Atama de Naniyori, and… after that cute intro, it suddenly shifts into a loud, heavy section.

“This isn’t what I expected!”—you might actually blurt that out the first time you hear it.

And the thing is, the arrangement is downright cool.

Keep an ear on the unpredictable sound design and be sure to listen all the way to the end!
