[For 3-year-olds] A roundup of craft ideas to enjoy in summer! Introducing various motifs and techniques

Summer is full of fun events at nurseries and kindergartens, like water play and festivals! But there are also days when it’s too hot to play outside.

On those days, how about enjoying some crafting? Through making things, children can discover new ideas, get inspired, and feel happy.

Here, we’ve gathered summer craft ideas recommended for three-year-olds.

With a variety of themes and techniques, kids can create projects they’ll enjoy.

Please use this as a reference and have fun enjoying summer together with the children! Because the children’s creations are treated as works, we use the term “seisaku” (制作) in the text.

[Age 3] A roundup of craft ideas to enjoy in summer! Introducing various motifs and techniques (71–80)

Swaying wind chimes

As a summery craft idea for July, we recommend wobbly wind chimes.

Teachers and children can enjoy making them together, and after they’re done, the kids can take them home and keep enjoying them! You can decorate pudding or jelly cups and use them directly as wind chimes, take apart and repurpose the lids from six-piece cheese packs, or use capsule toy containers as they are—with a bit of creativity, you can turn recycled materials into lovely wind chimes! Note that making wind chimes involves a step where holes must be made, so be sure that adults handle this part.

Let the children put on stickers and draw pictures as their part of the process.

ice pop

Popsicles you crave in summer.

They’re not just cold and delicious—their colorful look is adorable, too.

Here’s a craft idea for making popsicle art.

Prepare construction paper in your favorite colors.

Bright hues like neon also turn out super cute.

Draw popsicle shapes on the paper and decorate them.

Paint them with colors, or go all out with stickers and washi tape! Once you’re done decorating, cut them out along the outlines and glue on popsicle sticks to finish.

Hang them on a wall and soak up the summer vibe!

Fluffy shaved ice made with tissues

Shaved ice is a classic at summer festivals! Haven’t most kids tried it at least once? Here, we’ll introduce a craft idea that expresses shaved ice using tissue.

First, cut white construction paper into a mountain shape, then apply glue and stick on crumpled tissue.

Soak it with watercolor paint diluted with water to make the syrup.

Finally, attach it to a plate made from construction paper, and it’s done! Using syrups in different colors makes it look great and will be fun for the kids, too.

Festival yo-yo with a marble run

Marbles are sometimes found in ramune soda, so they tend to evoke a summery feeling, don’t they? Here’s a craft idea that uses those marbles.

Line a box with construction paper, then roll marbles coated with paint over the paper.

Wherever the marbles roll, they leave paint and create patterns.

Try expressing patterns freely using paints in various colors.

Once the paint dries, cut the paper into a yo-yo shape, attach a fastener made from pink construction paper and a rubber band with the end rounded, and you’re done! It’s also a great idea for a summer wall display.

Handmade toys for pool play

Let’s make a toy with the kids that will double the fun of playing in the pool.

First, cut a plastic bottle to a suitable length, and to prevent injuries, round off the cut edge by pressing it with an iron.

Make several holes in the bottom so water comes out like a shower.

Next, thread small pieces of straw onto raffia tape to create a handle.

Finally, decorate the bottle by sticking on colorful vinyl tape cut into various shapes, and you’re done.

This activity is perfect for fine motor skills, like threading and sticking stickers.

The bright colors are sure to boost kids’ excitement for water play!

Paper plate wreath

This is a paper plate wreath that boosts your summer mood and makes you feel excited just by looking at it.

First, cut out half of the circular center of a paper plate.

Draw a watermelon on the lower half, and glue origami sunflowers and other decorations to the top.

You can also cut it out the same way and make the lower section an ocean, then decorate it with origami fish and boats.

Another idea is to cut out the center and make a pineapple.

Pack it full of summer motifs to create a tropical vibe!

[Stencil] Uchiwa Fan Making

How about making uchiwa fans in July using a stenciling technique where kids dab paint stamps onto templates? The teacher can prepare the stencils in advance and have the children dab the paint onto them.

Any summery design works—think of themes that help kids feel the season, like sea creatures, shells, fireworks, or watermelons.

A tip is to use stamp colors that stand out against the background paper.

The stamping process is a lot of fun, so the children are sure to enjoy it.
