Perfect Summer Craft Ideas to Try in July for 4-Year-Olds

Four-year-olds who are trying hard to express what they want to do and what they can do.

Here, we’ll introduce July-perfect crafts recommended for four-year-olds, themed around Tanabata, water play, and sea creatures.

We hope this helps you create wonderful pieces that showcase each child’s individuality.

Be sure to display what they make.

Value children’s free ideas and let them express the joys of summer!

Since we treat what children make as works of art, we use the term “production” consistently in the main text.

[For 4-year-olds] Summer-perfect craft ideas to try in July (1–10)

ice cream

[For 4-year-olds] Seasonal Origami: Ice Cream
ice cream

I’ll show you how to fold a cold and tasty ice cream.

Prepare one sheet of origami paper and fold it into a triangle.

Open it once, then fold the corners in so they meet the center line.

Fold the bottom corner up to overlap the top corner, then flip it over.

Fold about one quarter of the larger triangle to separate the ice cream from the cone.

Finally, flip it over and fold the tips slightly to refine the shape—your ice cream is complete! It’s also fun to use colored pens to color the flavor you like and add toppings.

[scribbles] Tanabata decorations

Tanabata decorations where you can write wishes are perfect for a summer craft.

Try making them together with one-year-olds.

First, let them scribble with crayons on white construction paper, then decorate it with round stickers.

Cut it into the shape of Hikoboshi’s body, and paste another piece of paper on top where the wish will be written.

The key is to make the most of the lovely patterns the children create.

Prepare Orihime and Hikoboshi’s faces with construction paper, and let the children make the facial parts with stickers or draw them with crayons.

After that, just glue all the parts together.

You could also interview the parents to write down the children’s wishes.

Four Picks for Uchiwa (Hand Fan) Making

Uchiwa fans are a classic item for beating the summer heat.

They’re also used in recreational activities, so they’re probably familiar to children, too.

Here are four summer-themed uchiwa craft ideas! First, a yo-yo design that lets you enjoy wax-resist painting; second, goldfish made with handprints; third, morning glories created with wet-on-wet bleeding effects; and fourth, a watermelon motif you can make with fun stamping.

All of these ideas are great for four-year-olds, so have fun crafting and make a wonderful uchiwa!

Colorful fireworks with straws

When it comes to making fireworks with straws, stamping and blow painting are classics, but here’s an idea that uses short straw pieces to depict fireworks.

First, prepare straws in your favorite colors and cut them into pieces about 1 cm long.

On a round piece of black construction paper, arrange the straw pieces to resemble fireworks.

Adding pom-poms or round stickers in the gaps makes it extra cute.

Finally, attach your fireworks to a sheet of holographic origami paper cut slightly larger than the black circle—and you’re done! Try using straws in various colors to capture the festive brilliance of fireworks.

A cute heart-themed Tanabata card

July 7th is Tanabata.

Here’s a perfect craft idea for the occasion.

You can also use it as a wall decoration, so give it a try! Cut blue construction paper into a heart shape and use a cotton swab stamp to create a starry sky all over.

In the center of the heart, use finger stamps to depict the Milky Way.

Make the outfits for the Orihime and Hikoboshi figures using a bleeding-art technique with coffee filters, then attach the facial parts made from construction paper.

Once you’ve glued Orihime and Hikoboshi onto the heart base, it’s complete.

If you want to hang it as a wall decoration, punch a hole in the base and thread a ribbon through it.

Colorful turtle made with masking tape

This is an art project that colorfully depicts turtles, a creature popular with children.

First, prepare white drawing paper and have the children place masking tape while imagining a turtle’s shell.

Once the tape is on, get some paints ready and have them color the white areas of the paper in bright colors.

After the paint dries, peel off the tape to reveal a colorful shell! Cut the paper into a shell shape, then attach parts for the head, legs, and tail to complete the turtle.

Don’t forget to draw the face with crayons, too.

Watermelon and Melon Made with Construction Paper

When summer comes, you start craving red, sweet watermelon, don’t you? So as a summer craft idea, how about making a watermelon? Cut out two green circular pieces, one red circular piece, and one white circular piece from construction paper.

Use a cotton swab to stamp seeds onto the red piece, and glue torn pieces of black origami paper onto one of the green pieces to create the watermelon rind pattern.

Fold that patterned green piece and the white piece in half.

Then, on a green base, layer and glue the patterned green piece, the white piece, and the stamped red piece in that order.

Add a vine, and you’re done!
