A hot summer when heatstroke precautions mean more time spent indoors.
Here are some fun craft ideas that let children feel the summer even inside! Themes that five-year-olds will enjoy include fireworks, watermelons, stag beetles, and sunflowers.
Crafts using summer motifs nurture children’s imagination and expressive skills, and help them develop fine motor skills, too.
These activities are perfect for five-year-olds, so try making a variety of things and enjoy a wonderful summer! Because the children’s creations are treated as artworks, this text uses the term “seisaku” (制作) to refer to them.

Wall decoration with fireworks in relief

You can make a picture that looks like fireworks spreading across the night sky using a paper plate and similar materials.
It’s beautiful, so give it a try! First, paint the surface of a paper plate black.
Once it’s painted, make several cuts toward the center and cut out long, narrow triangles.
After cutting them out, turn the black side to the front and stick on round stickers or similar decorations.
When the round stickers are nicely placed, attach it onto another backing sheet that’s been painted black.
It will look three-dimensional, as if the fireworks are popping out.
It’s great for adding a seasonal touch when you put it on a wall or by the front door.
Fireworks crafting activity

When you think of summer, many people probably think of fireworks.
How about drawing a picture of fireworks? We’re going to try a unique way of using paints.
First, prepare some paints, brushes, black construction paper, and a cup of water.
Using a brush dipped in water, drop paint onto the black paper so it looks like fireworks.
Once you’ve placed a good amount, blow through a straw to spread the paint.
If you blow in different directions, it will look like the fireworks are bursting outward.
The colors blend together beautifully.
Give it a try!
goldfish

Let’s try folding a goldfish with origami.
Origami goldfish look colorful when made in various colors, and they give a very cool, refreshing impression.
As for how to fold this goldfish, the steps are the same as the origami samurai helmet up to a certain point.
Flatten the helmet sideways and fold back the tail section, and a goldfish will appear.
The horn parts of the helmet become the goldfish’s fins.
If you put lots of colorful goldfish in a glass bowl or add paper that resembles aquatic plants, it will look even more refreshing.
Try getting creative and see what you can make.

flower wind chime

Let me introduce flower wind chimes that make hot summer days feel cooler.
Prepare a clear file folder, scissors, origami paper, tissue paper, kite string, and a bell, and let’s get started.
Cut the clear file to the size you want for the wind chime base.
Tear the tissue paper into pieces you like, roll them into small balls, and glue them onto the wind chime base.
Cut the origami paper to make a tanzaku (a hanging strip), thread the kite string through it, and hang it.
Adjust the size of the bell you hang on the wind chime to your liking.
Using patterned origami for the tanzaku can make it look even prettier.
Give it a try!
Papercraft watermelon

Perfect for a July wall display! Here’s a paper craft watermelon.
Get some construction paper, glue, scissors, and a stapler ready.
When cutting the watermelon using a template, staple the construction paper and the template together first—this keeps them from shifting and makes cutting easier.
For the seeds, using round stickers is also recommended.
When attaching the inner part of the watermelon to the outer rind, line up the fold lines and the edges.
Glue them together in a way that creates thickness.
A three-dimensional watermelon is sure to excite the children!
Four Picks for Uchiwa (Hand Fan) Making
Uchiwa fans are a classic item for beating the summer heat.
They’re also used in recreational activities, so they’re probably familiar to children, too.
Here are four summer-themed uchiwa craft ideas! First, a yo-yo design that lets you enjoy wax-resist painting; second, goldfish made with handprints; third, morning glories created with wet-on-wet bleeding effects; and fourth, a watermelon motif you can make with fun stamping.
All of these ideas are great for four-year-olds, so have fun crafting and make a wonderful uchiwa!
Soap bubbles made with tissue paper
https://www.tiktok.com/@buchiko_hoiku/video/7369783897984486672Soft pastel colors are so beautiful! Let me introduce an idea for making “soap bubbles” using tissue paper.
You’ll need tissue paper, white drawing paper, a spray bottle, a compass, and scissors.
First, tear tissue paper in various colors and spread the pieces over the white drawing paper.
Next, fill the spray bottle with water and spritz it to dampen the tissue paper.
Once it’s dry, remove the tissue paper and use scissors to cut the drawing paper into circles.
If you display them together with children’s photos or illustrations of straws, they’ll look even cuter.
Be sure to give it a try!
