When you gaze at a sky dyed by the setting sun, you feel the day coming to a close, and at the same time a hard-to-describe sense of poignancy and loneliness spreads through your chest.

In fact, there are many timeless, heart-wrenching masterpieces themed around sunsets, regardless of era.

Whether rock, pop, or folk, each track is filled with melancholy, nostalgia, and bittersweet emotion.

Give them a listen when you want to calm your mind or when you’re in the mood for a tender, sorrowful ballad.

A summer song you’ll want to listen to by the seaside as the sun sets.

It’s a track by the hip-hop group RIP SLYME, known for hits like “Rakuen Baby,” released in 2008 as their 15th single.

The sound makes you want to nod your shoulders along, with a crisp, satisfying flow—it just feels good to listen to.

It puts you in a laid-back mood, almost lulling you to sleep.

Add this nostalgic number that captures the end-of-summer feeling to your playlist.

Red sky at duskFurēberu Shōnen Gasshōdan

When it comes to songs about sunsets, many people probably think of this one first.

It’s a representative Japanese children’s song that many of us heard in school.

It might even be the very first “sunset song” you ever recognized in your life.

The lyrics were written in 1919 by Uko Nakamura, a poet who was working as an elementary school teacher, and the music was later composed by Shin Kusakawa.

The word “koyake” is said to have two possible interpretations: one is that it was chosen for its pleasing sound, and the other is that it reflects different scenes of a changing sunset.

The song depicts feelings experienced when returning home and beautiful scenery, with lyrics that gently accompany you as you make your way back to your hometown.

It’s a breakup song from Yorushika’s 2020 album “Plagiarism,” depicting the feelings of a man whose beloved woman has gone.

Left alone in his room, perhaps out of pain, he starts to doubt: Did she really love me? Was it all a honey trap? Yet as evening comes, he clings to a faint hope that she’ll return to this room.

Because he truly loved her, he can’t bring himself to believe in the breakup.

It’s a highly recommended track that becomes all the more poignant when you listen to it while watching the sunset.

Its spacious, expansive feel conjures up majestic nature, and BEGIN’s signature gentle atmosphere wraps you in a sense of calm.

It stirs up nostalgia and a longing for home, as if those feelings rise with the sunset.

Higa’s vocals, brimming with warmth and generosity, are wonderful and moving, soothing the rough edges of daily life.

It makes you feel as though you’ve returned to your hometown.

Words of FarewellKaientai

This is a song sung by Tetsuya Takeda, the vocalist of Kaientai.

It’s often played on programs like “24-Hour Television,” so even people who aren’t from that generation have probably heard it.

When we look back on the past, we feel like expressing our gratitude to many people, don’t we? This song captures that feeling.

The depiction of the cityscape at dusk at the beginning supports the sense of nostalgia that permeates the entire piece.
