Tsugaru Jongara Bushi is known as one of the most famous Japanese folk songs.

The fast, intricate playing of the Tsugaru shamisen has worldwide appeal, making it a traditional folk piece that Japan can proudly present to the world.

However, the content of this song has a surprisingly deep backstory that traces back to the Sengoku period, specifically the second year of Keicho (1597).

According to one theory, it was composed in memory of a monk named Jōen who lived in Aomori, the region referenced in the song’s title.

It might be enjoyable to appreciate not only the music but also its story.

Ginga Homen P’s songs, shining with a distinct Japanese flair, continue to captivate many fans.

The ethereal world woven together with Hatsune Miku’s vocals resonates deeply with listeners.

This work expresses eternal love, with the theme of the beautiful feelings of romance that modern people are beginning to forget.

The fusion of traditional Japanese instruments and rock is alluring, and its addictive quality is a defining feature.

It’s a recommended track for times when you want to feel a touch of nostalgia and soothe your heart.

A moving number that those who wish to bask in a romantic mood should definitely hear.

A hidden gem by Kanjani Eight.

It’s a love song about a clumsy man’s affection for a woman, with a gentle melody that seeps into the heart.

Many people might not know this track, but it’s the kind of song that will likely make listeners say, “That was a good song,” by the time they reach the end.

Strongly, strongly, stronglyKanjani∞

Even among Kanjani’s songs, this number where they sing while playing guitar is one of my absolute favorites.

All the members sing while playing instruments, and even though they might usually seem like they’re goofing around, it really shows how much they love music and how talented they are.

This song, by singer-songwriter Mao Abe, gives you a straightforward push with plain, unadorned words.

As the title suggests, it sings, “If there’s something you want to tell someone important to you, say it out loud!” If you storm out after a fight with your partner, listening to this track might help you cool down a bit.

It reminds you of the importance of honestly voicing feelings like “I’m sorry” and “Thank you for everything.”

Tsugaru Jongara-bushi ~ Promised Landkurofune

Tsugaru Jongara-bushi ~ Promised Landkurofune

As their name suggests, Kurofune evokes a distinctly “wa” (Japanese) sensibility.

They’re an unconventional jazz band featuring TRI4TH’s bassist Yuki Sekiya, pianist Daisuke Takeuchi, Tsugaru-shamisen player Hikari Shirafuji, and singer Anna Sato from Amami City.

Their urbane jazz sound fuses seamlessly with Japan’s traditional music—Tsugaru shamisen and the folk songs of the Amami Islands—achieving a superb balance.

It’s an East-meets-West mixture you might well call a hybrid jazz band, and first-time listeners are sure to be astonished.

In their hands, even standard jazz numbers are translated into Amami dialect and reborn in Kurofune’s distinctive style.

If you’re looking for an original jazz band, this one comes highly recommended!
