[2026] Popular British Artists: Recommended Singer-Songwriters
There’s something about music made by British musicians that strangely fits the ears and hearts of Japanese listeners.
The slightly damp vocals and melodies, introspective lyrics, an air of aestheticism… You don’t even need to cite examples like Queen—who, in their early days, enjoyed higher popularity and recognition in Japan than in their home country—to say that UK rock and Japanese listeners are a perfect match.
This time, we’re highlighting popular British solo artists—rappers and singer-songwriters—from a fellow island nation that shares many similarities with Japan.
Centered on today’s hottest young talents while also including legendary veterans, we present a wide-ranging lineup that transcends eras.
It might even help you discover the influences behind your favorite Japanese artists.

Jake Bugg, from Nottingham, England, signed with major label Mercury Records in 2011 at the young age of 17, and the following year drew attention as a sensational newcomer by serving as the opening act on tours for none other than Noel Gallagher and The Stone Roses.
His self-titled debut album, released in 2012, naturally hit No.
1 on the UK charts.
His voice and melodies—combining the impulsiveness of a teenager with a mature poise—felt innately gifted, to the point that some music fans were reminded of a young Bob Dylan.
Especially early on, Jake was markedly influenced by ’60s folk, blues, garage, and psychedelia, while his look and presence epitomized a quintessentially British lad.
Never one to stay confined to a single genre, he has showcased an increasingly refined and wide-ranging musicality with each release.
As of 2021, he has released four albums—and he’s still only 27.
