It was the theme song for TBS’s Tuesday drama “Eye Love You,” and it really felt like a huge hit in 2024! There aren’t many songs that stay this high for so long, and I had lots of students try “Ikuoku Kounen,” but even those who are good with high notes really struggled to sing the whole thing… Compared to other Omoinotake songs, the high range is definitely wider, with an overall range of D3–F#5.

There are many things to be mindful of—core support, breath use, agility, placement of resonance—and if you push in chest voice right away, you’ll absolutely wreck your throat.

It might be better to start by practicing so you can sing it in head voice.

In fact, head voice uses more air than chest voice, so once you do it correctly, it’s actually quite tiring.

I also recommend humming so that you feel constant resonance in your forehead (between the eyebrows) and head!

Fujii Kaze, the singer-songwriter known for hits like “Nan Nan w” and “Tabiji.” His song “Kirari” doesn’t sound all that difficult when you’re just listening, but it’s surprisingly tough when you actually try to sing it.

The song is mid-tempo, yet the rhythm is distinctive, so keeping from drifting off-beat can be quite a challenge.

The trick is not to belt it out—sing gently with a tone that’s between chest voice and falsetto.

Keep that in mind when you practice!

Among L’Arc~en~Ciel’s many songs, “Driver’s High” is one of the most popular.

It also served as the theme song for the anime GTO, which helped it gain worldwide acclaim.

The song’s vocal range is quite wide, from mid1 E to high B.

While high B is often sung in falsetto, in this song it’s delivered with a mixed voice, and it appears frequently—six times in total.

It’s a perfect piece for practicing mixed voice, which requires strong projection, so definitely give it a try.

Singer-songwriter Sano ibuki, known for a style that channels influences from Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire into pop music.

He has released many technically demanding songs, and among them, “Batten Banzai” is particularly difficult.

In this piece, falsetto appears in the chorus.

It’s not just about hitting high notes; you have to deliver the falsetto with a slightly sweet tone, so beyond pitch, a high level of dynamic control is also required.

Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni, a band with a catchy style that enjoys immense popularity among teenage girls, has released a new song titled “Binetsu-ma.” While the vocal range required is fairly broad, the real challenge lies elsewhere.

Most of the high notes in this track are sung using a whisper voice, a breathy vocal technique.

Producing it momentarily isn’t an issue, but singing in whisper voice throughout demands substantial diaphragm control, making this a song with a high overall level of difficulty.

One of the most popular female rappers among teenage and twenty-something women right now is Chanmina.

Her eccentric fashion and the kind of straightforward rhymes only she can deliver are incredibly captivating.

Among her songs, one I recommend for its wide high-register range is Biscuit.

While the song isn’t particularly wide in range overall, it features a long, sustained mixed voice toward the end.

The track has few difficult spots, but those few are quite challenging.

If you can maintain vocal power while using mixed voice, definitely give it a try.

poofKing Gnu

King Gnu is a band that has gained popularity for its highly original musicality.

While they have many stylish tracks, they’re also known for having a lot of difficult songs.

Among them, the one I especially recommend is Doron.

Known as the theme song for the film Stolen Identity 2 (literally: I Just Dropped My Smartphone: Captive Murderer), this track has a gritty atmosphere and a fairly wide vocal range spanning from mid1 A# to hi A#.

On top of that, the melodic leaps are quite intense, but the most challenging parts are the chorus and the C section.

When the chorus and C section hit, the tempo jumps up at once, leaving few breathing points; combined with the drastic pitch movements, it becomes extremely difficult to stay on pitch.
