[2026 Edition] Stylish Western Music for Driving — The Latest Popular Songs

Back in the day it was a homemade cassette tape, and nowadays it’s a playlist you put together on a streaming service… If you love both music and driving, you’ve probably enjoyed the ritual of picking BGM for a drive at least once.

Maybe you usually listen to your favorite albums or playlists you’ve made yourself, but you’re starting to feel a little bored.

So in this article, even with the classic theme of “Western songs recommended for driving,” we’re deliberately focusing on the latest tracks and curating a lineup with an emphasis on style.

Along with hit songs, we’ve also picked artists that only early-bird music fans might know, so if you like discovering talent early, this is a must-check!

Coin is a synth-pop band from Nashville, USA, who made their first visit to Japan at Summer Sonic in 2019.

Despite their funny band name, their songs strike a perfect balance between polished pop craftsmanship and an indie, handmade feel—making their sound accessible even to newcomers to Western music.

In April 2022, they released their fourth album, Uncanny Valley, and the track Cutie, introduced here, was put out as its lead single.

The up-tempo, danceable beat and irresistibly catchy melody are as strong as ever, and with playful embellishments and stylish mid-song guitar chopping, it’s a dancefloor-ready killer tune.

Of course, you shouldn’t dance while driving, but it’s perfect as in-car BGM when you want to lift your mood.

PJ Morton is an outstanding R&B/soul singer-songwriter and music producer born in the musical mecca of New Orleans, and as a keyboardist he has been a member of Maroon 5 since 2012, continuing a wide-ranging, multifaceted career.

As a singer-songwriter, Morton has consistently released excellent albums, and in May 2022 he unveiled his new album Watch The Sun.

Featuring major artists such as Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, and Nas, the album showcases a remarkable sense of balance that seamlessly moves between roots music and the contemporary—truly impressive.

The song highlighted here, Please Don’t Walk Away, is included on the album; its gentle vocals and harmonies, along with strings and a stylish horn section, weave a smooth, mellow groove that’s immensely pleasing.

It’s the kind of track that would be kind even to drivers weary from a long road trip.

If you’re looking for driving music that’s stylish yet lets you savor a deep musical flavor, I highly recommend B-Side, born from the collaboration between Leon Bridges—one of the leading contemporary soul/R&B singer-songwriters—and the trio Khruangbin, famed for their mysterious aura and exotically scented funk.

It’s the lead track from their 2022 collaborative EP Texas Moon, and its soulful melodies and psychedelic grooves create a sound you won’t find elsewhere.

Different from radio-friendly, easy listening, its truly deep allure is irresistible—and once you’re hooked, there’s no getting out.

It’s the kind of track that makes you want to drive through an endless stretch of open desert, soundtracked by the remarkable chemistry of these two talents.

Rosalía, the Spanish artist who garnered attention with her track “Lo Vas A Olvidar” alongside none other than Billie Eilish—known for rarely collaborating with other artists—and who has been highly praised by many big-name musicians, wields a unique style that fuses traditional flamenco with contemporary pop.

Her third album, Motomami, released in March 2022, has been a major talking point in Japan as well, especially among dedicated Western music fans.

With several song titles in Japanese and a sound inspired not only by her Spanish roots but also by Eastern cultures—particularly Japan—Rosalía’s exceptionally distinctive music is something you should experience at least once.

Among her tracks, “La Fama,” a collaboration with The Weeknd, incorporates bachata, a genre originating in the Dominican Republic.

It’s a song that blends a Latin flavor with a thoroughly modern and stylish feel, making it a perfect accent for your driving playlist—be sure to add it!

Among the theme articles this time, for those looking for promising up-and-coming artists who are still relatively unknown in Japan, I’d like to recommend REDVEIL, a rising rapper–songwriter who had just turned 18 in April 2022.

A precocious artist who began making beats at the young age of 11, he has been influenced by figures like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, while presenting his own distinctive sound that’s already generating buzz among early-adopter music fans.

His album learn 2 swim, released on his 18th birthday, as you can hear from the track “pg baby” featured here, carries elements of lo-fi hip hop that sample old soul and jazz records, making it a sound that even those not usually into hip hop may find approachable.

That said, the lyrics, which depict the real emotions of an 18-year-old living in contemporary America, are by no means bright, so I especially encourage younger music fans to pay close attention to the words.
