Formed in 2001, they are a leading American metalcore band in both popularity and prowess.

From their earliest days, they have showcased a metalcore sound that blends fluid twin leads, ferocious growls, and melancholic clean passages, earning strong popularity in Japan as well.

They enjoyed commercial success and a smooth-sailing career, but in 2013 vocalist Tim Lambesis was arrested following a scandal.

The remaining members continued under a new band name with a different vocalist, but later went on hiatus.

In June 2018, the pre-hiatus lineup made a triumphant return, and in 2019 they released the long-awaited comeback album Shaped by Fire, proving they were back in full force.

A five-piece band that drove the metalcore boom from the 2000s onward and still enjoys immense popularity.

Back then, they were even sometimes referred to as “MA metal,” after their home state of Massachusetts.

In the band’s career, Jesse Leach handled vocals from their debut until 2002, Howard Jones took over from 2002 to 2012, and after Howard’s departure Jesse returned as vocalist.

Their first two albums featured youthful metalcore/post-hardcore infused with electronic elements—a sound very evocative of the late 2000s to early 2010s—which helped them gain traction.

Starting around their third album, 2013’s From Death to Destiny, they began gravitating toward a more classic hard rock style, shifting to a tougher, more straight-ahead sound.

At one point, the vocalist left and was temporarily replaced, but after one album the original singer returned.

Despite this brief turmoil, they remained steadily active as of 2020.
