I still can’t forget the shock when The Strokes—who spearheaded the early-2000s rock ’n’ roll revival—debuted.
Their style, delivering ultra-simple and cool garage rock/rock ’n’ roll without slipping into mere nostalgia, expressed through the fresh sensibilities of New Yorkers barely in their twenties, influenced so many that similar bands sprung up in droves.
The sheer number of bands with “The” in their names that debuted after their breakout says it all.
Still active in the 2020s and now a full-fledged heavyweight, their early classic “Last Nite” is a single from their 2001 masterpiece debut album Is This It—a superlative track that distills the band’s youthful charm and can be called the blueprint of the Strokes’ sound.
Frontman Julian Casablancas’s distinctively husky vocals and the slightly affected, quintessentially New Yorker lyrics are just unbeatable.
Death on the stairsThe Libertines
Despite having only three albums released to date and never achieving massive global commercial success, The Libertines are one of the most beloved British rock bands to come out of the 2000s.
With two frontmen—Pete Doherty and Carl Barât—their straight, raw rock sound, romantic melodies, and intellectually poetic lyrics possess a charm that can only be described as quintessentially British.
The track we’re highlighting here, Death on the Stairs from their debut album, wasn’t released as a single, but it’s a fan favorite and widely regarded as a classic.
It’s said to be a particularly important song for the band as well, and the style in which Carl sings the first verse and Pete takes the lead on the second is nothing short of perfect.
The lyrics are notably rich in storytelling and full of suggestive nuance.
For what it’s worth, my personal top recommendation is the version produced by former Suede member Bernard Butler, included on the Japan-only mini-album Don’t Look Back into the Sun!
Knights Of CydoniaMuse
Despite being a simple three-piece, MUSE has won widespread popularity with a unique, epic rock sound that pays no heed to passing trends.
Since releasing their debut album in 1999, the MUSE sound—driven by members with exceptional musicianship—has evolved with every new release, conquering charts not only in their native UK but also in the United States, and maintaining huge popularity worldwide, including Japan.
Their unstoppable run as the ultimate rock trio continues unabated into the 2020s.
Here, I’d like to introduce “Knights of Cydonia,” the closing track from their 2006 masterpiece Black Holes and Revelations, the album that first took MUSE into the U.S.
Top 10.
It’s an anthemic number that only MUSE could create: a vast sonic landscape, dynamic rock power, overtly dramatic song structure, sing-along-ready melodies—packed with all the technical prowess the band commanded at the time.
Often performed as the final encore at their shows, just listening to the track can leave you with the same exhilaration as watching a feature film.

Sk8er BoiAvril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne, Canada’s ultimate rock princess, now revered by younger artists as the “Emo Queen.” Her debut album Let Go, released in 2002 when she was just 17, posted an astonishing 20 million sales worldwide and shot her straight to the top tier of stardom.
Many people were likely drawn to buy the album by her striking beauty and the defiant look on the cover.
When it comes to Avril’s early classics, songs like “Complicated,” with its wistful melody that pierces the heart, come to mind.
But today I’d like to highlight the upbeat anthem “Sk8er Boi,” a track that embodies her meteoric rise at the time.
One listen to its exhilarating pop-punk sound and irresistibly catchy melody will transport you right back to the early 2000s.
Her husky tone—which feels tailor-made for rock—is fantastic too.
With a pop-punk revival quietly simmering in the 2020s, younger listeners might find this track surprisingly fresh.
Freak On a LeashKorn
This is a song by Korn, known as a leading act of nu metal.
Included on their 1998 album Follow the Leader, the track marked a new direction for the band.
It features down-tuned guitars, groovy rhythms, and Jonathan Davis’s distinctive vocals.
The lyrics express personal anguish and defiance against society, resonating with many listeners.
Released in April 1999, the song ranked high on the Billboard charts and was certified gold in Australia.
Its music video also generated buzz, winning both an MTV Video Music Award and a Grammy.
This work is recommended for those who feel inner conflict or a sense of alienation from society.
Chop Suey!System Of A Down
System of a Down, the heavy metal band that left a powerful mark on the Western rock scene of the 2000s.
Packed with a raw yet intricately crafted sound and profound messages you won’t forget after a single listen, this track was released in September 2001 as the lead single from their second album, Toxicity.
Centered on themes of self-reflection and inner conflict, its intense sound and striking lyrics resonated with many listeners, reaching No.
7 on the Modern Rock chart.
As one of the band’s signature songs, it remains beloved to this day—a perfect track for blowing off steam or facing yourself.
Take Me OutFranz Ferdinand
Even among the many bands of the 2000s that updated past music into their own sound, the arrival of Franz Ferdinand—who centered their style on the crisp, choppy guitar work associated with so-called post-punk while deftly incorporating elements of traditional rock ’n’ roll and the cutting-edge dance music of the time—was truly shocking.
With a clear concept of “music girls can dance to,” they sent one catchy hit after another up the charts, with guitar riffs that practically functioned as sing-along melodies.
Their signature track, Take Me Out, is a quintessential masterpiece that epitomizes their strengths.
Its structure—almost as if two different types of songs coexist between the first half and everything that follows—is nothing short of brilliant, making it one of the finest danceable indie rock songs the 2000s produced.
Incidentally, most members had endured long years of struggle before their breakthrough, and the exceptionally high level of polish and airtight songwriting they displayed from their debut was clearly underpinned by those hard-earned careers.
