Torna a SurrientoLuciano Pavarotti

A representative song of the canzone, “Torna a Surriento.” When you think of canzone, you imagine pieces composed long ago that are still being sung today, right? And indeed, many canzoni were written hundreds of years ago, just as that image suggests.

But this song is different.

Surprisingly, it was composed in 1902 for Giuseppe Zanardelli, the prime minister at the time, when he visited Sorrento—the very setting of the piece.

It’s relatively new, isn’t it? The lyrics depict a love story themed around the sea of Sorrento.

This time, I’ve chosen Luciano Pavarotti’s version!

Lightning By The SeaBeshken

Lightning By The Sea sings of a unique sensibility toward the ocean with a minimal sound reminiscent of Radiohead.

It’s a track released in 2017 by New York–based artist Beshken, included on the album for time is the longest distance between two people.

Having originally worked as a jazz guitarist and DJed at clubs in Los Angeles, Beshken has crossed a variety of genres.

It’s precisely that background that enables him to blend different styles—like electronics and indie rock—to create a fresh sound, as he does on this track.

PacificElectric Mantis

“Pacific” is a track released in 2015 by Portland-based producer Electric Mantis.

True to an EDM producer’s touch, intricate sounds like snaps and vocal chops dart around like refracted light.

The slightly wobbly synth tones make you feel as if you’re underwater.

It’s a song that lets you savor a pleasant kind of chaos—EDM crafted with a distinctive sonic character.

If that piques your interest, give it a listen.

Sea CruiseFrankie Ford

A cover version of a song written by popular New Orleans pianist Huey “Piano” Smith.

Some of the lyrics were rewritten by Frankie Ford.

It was released in 1959 and became a hit.

Lost SailorGrateful Dead

The Grateful Dead are known for a style that blends rock with country music.

When it comes to their songs about the sea, “Lost Sailor” comes to mind.

It’s a track from their 1980 album Go to Heaven, depicting a sailor who becomes adrift after being caught in a storm.

The lyrics are a bit frightening, but if you replace the storm or the sea with something else, you can enjoy the song from various perspectives.

I also hope you’ll pay attention to the gap between the terrifying imagery and the sailor’s state of mind.

Beach SideKings Of Leon

A gentle California-pop song featuring a 70s-style drum tone by Nathan Followill.

It’s included on Kings of Leon’s fifth album, Come Around Sundown, released in 2010.

The album reached No.

1 on the charts in countries such as Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
