[Childcare] Easy to make! Handmade toys that delight 0-year-olds

As the months go by, a 0-year-old baby steadily grows and can do more and more.

Each little milestone is joyful and incredibly precious.

Many people may be thinking, “I want to make handmade toys” that match their baby’s development and interests.

So this time, we’re introducing handmade toy ideas that are perfect for babies under one.

These toys are packed with ideas that babies can look at, listen to, touch, and play with in fascination!

They’re all easy to make using familiar recyclables or materials from the 100-yen shop, so be sure to find something your baby will love and give it a try.

Swirly roll

Work No.020 Spinning Roll [Handmade Toy by a Nursery Teacher]
Swirly roll

How about making a fun “whirling roll” where the fabric keeps getting longer and longer? This idea is inspired by a roll of toilet paper.

First, prepare a plastic wrap core and cut it short.

Then wrap it with lengths of fabric that you’ve joined together, and you’re done.

Try combining different types and colors of fabric—that way you can enjoy the excitement of wondering, “What kind of fabric will come out next?” However, if you make it too long, it may hang down to the floor when extended, creating a slipping hazard.

Make it to suit where you plan to set it up.

Toys that you can roll and play with for a long time are also recommended.

For this one, prepare a cardboard tape core, cover both ends with plastic lids, and put beads or a bell inside.

When you roll it, you can see the beads moving inside and enjoy the sound of the bell.

By the way, cutting a lid from a plastic container makes the lids easy to create.

You can have fun rolling it together or just watching it roll.

As your child grows, they can enjoy it in different ways, like crawling after it.

wiggly toy

How about a wiggly toy that moves like a living creature? This idea uses plastic bottle caps with holes drilled in them, threaded onto a string.

If you picture a snake toy, it might be easier to imagine the finished product.

Decorate the caps to create the look you like.

You can enjoy watching it move by pulling on the string, or let people actually touch and play with it.

Its unique appearance leads to stimulation and fun.

snow globe

[Handmade Toys] Easy Snow Globe Craft – Make it easily with things you can prepare right away! Perfect as a baby toy, a kids’ craft or independent research project. Create your very own sparkling snow globe.
snow globe

How about making a glittering, beautiful-looking snow globe? In this project, you create a snow globe by putting liquid starch (laundry glue) and glitter into a 112 ml plastic bottle.

Unlike a typical snow globe, its easy-to-hold shape makes it fun to shake and play with.

By the way, the look of this snow globe changes a lot depending on the color and amount of glitter you use.

It could be fun to make several variations.

Also, don’t forget to seal it tightly so the liquid inside doesn’t spill.

Sticky building blocks

[Educational Play] I tried making magnetic building blocks with plastic bottle caps!!
Sticky building blocks

How about making magnetic building blocks that stick together? First, prepare some plastic bottle caps and magnets.

Glue a magnet to the inside of each cap, then stack caps together and screw them closed.

Repeat this process.

Kids will find it exciting to see the pieces attract or repel when stacked, and they’re sure to enjoy it.

Another perk is that you can build in ways that aren’t possible with regular blocks.

One caution: it’s dangerous if put in the mouth, so please be careful.

Swirl it up with plastic wrap

Wanna see the baby?! A rolling toy made from a paper towel roll
Swirl it up with plastic wrap

The wrap whirl toy is charming for its unique look.

The method is simple: first, prepare the core from a roll of plastic wrap.

Next, apply masking tape along the cut line on the core.

Finally, stick on a different-colored masking tape in the same manner, and it’s done.

Try finishing it with an image like a barber’s pole sign.

When you roll it, the two lines appear to intertwine, which is sure to catch the eye.

It can also be fun to roll it in front of a baby.

Infinite Tissues

Tissues are something children often see their caregivers using.

They may find it curious and interesting that fluttery sheets keep coming out of the box one after another.

That’s why I’d like to suggest the “endless tissues” idea.

Put a series of tied-together scarves into an empty tissue box so that when they’re pulled, they come out connected.

Depending on the child’s age, they may not be used to the pulling motion yet.

In that case, let them watch the caregiver demonstrate pulling.

They should still enjoy it plenty.
