[Childcare] For 5-year-olds! Autumn craft ideas [Part 2]

Autumn is full of fun events for children, like Halloween, sports festivals, and field trips.

In this article, we’ll introduce craft ideas that are perfect for the fall season.

Because the weather is pleasant in autumn, there are more chances to go for walks and collect acorns and fallen leaves.

We’re sharing lots of craft ideas that use these wonderful gifts from nature, as well as ideas you can use for events—so be sure to give them a try!

Because the children’s pieces are treated as works of art, we use the term “制作 (seisaku)” in the text to mean “creation/work.”

Chitose Ame bag

[Made in October] Chitose-ame Bag
Chitose Ame bag

Chitose-ame candy is essential for Shichi-Go-San in November.

It’s said that chitose-ame carries the wish for children to grow up healthy and strong.

These days, some parents even make the chitose-ame bags by hand.

So how about making chitose-ame bags as an October craft? It’s easy: paste white paper onto red construction paper, then add the “Shichi-Go-San” characters and a turtle and crane made from the children’s handprints.

Print the Shichi-Go-San characters in a light color so the children can trace them with crayons.

Provide samples of the turtle and crane as well, and have the children draw them.

Target Shooting Game: Halloween Version

This is a Halloween version of a well-known target game for preschool settings.

With ideas kids are sure to love—like a “Stretchy Mummy Stick” made from a straw and origami paper, a “Bat Shooter” made from a milk carton and rubber bands, and a “Monster Air Cannon” made from a plastic bottle and a balloon.

The instructions for each are simple, so why not let the children choose one and make it together? If you’re making targets, prepare some construction paper.

Place the target on top of a paper cup filled with candy, and if they manage to knock the target down, they get the candy— guaranteed to get everyone excited!

Pumpkin staff

Let’s make a pumpkin wand that also works as a Halloween costume prop! It’s easy to create with everyday materials, so it’s perfect for preschool or kindergarten Halloween crafts, or for making together as a parent-child activity.

First, prepare two pieces of construction paper cut into pumpkin shapes, and decorate them with a face or other motifs.

Next, stack two sheets of origami paper slightly offset, roll them up tightly to make a stick, and attach it to the back of one pumpkin.

Add some curling ribbon (suzuran tape) for extra flair! Finally, attach the second pumpkin on top, and you’re done.

Try making other motifs too—not just pumpkins—and have fun!

Torn-paper collage mushroom

How about adding patterns to a mushroom cap using torn-paper collage? First, cut out the mushroom cap and stem from construction paper.

If the children are old enough to use scissors, let them do it themselves; if not, the teacher should prepare the pieces in advance.

Next, tear colored origami paper into small pieces.

Then randomly glue the pieces onto the mushroom cap to decorate it.

Once you’ve covered it enough, attach the cap and stem to complete the mushroom.

If you like, draw a cute face on the stem with crayons or pens.

Crayon-resist mushroom painting

Let’s make mushrooms using a wax-resist painting technique! First, take a piece of construction paper cut into a mushroom cap shape and draw patterns on it with crayons.

Once your patterns are done, paint over the top with your favorite watercolor paint, using plenty of water for a solid wash.

The paint will resist the crayon marks, and the beautiful patterns will appear! After the paint dries, combine it with a piece of construction paper cut into the stem shape to complete your mushroom.

You can also add a face with round stickers or however you like.

Depending on the children’s ages, teachers should handle the cutting of the construction paper.

Halloween Paper-Cut Stamp

Let’s use paper-cut stamps to make lots of Halloween motifs! Combine two plastic bottle caps to create the base of the stamp, then cut cushion tape to form pumpkin and ghost faces.

It’s a detailed task, but letting five-year-olds express themselves freely will nurture their imagination! Create the Halloween motifs by cutting colored origami paper with scissors.

Preparing simple cutting patterns will make it easier for five-year-olds to participate.

Stamping the motifs made from origami—popping the stamp on again and again—is so much fun that the kids are sure to be completely absorbed!

Grapes in bubble art

This is a grape craft made with bubble art.

Bubble art is a technique that uses bubbles created from a soap solution.

Mix detergent, water, and paint to make a colored soap solution, then blow through a straw to create bubbles.

Place the bubbles onto drawing paper to make patterns.

Once the bubbles dry, cut them out into grape shapes, and attach them to a grape backing sheet to finish.

Instead of a straw, you can also use a cut plastic bottle covered with cloth or netting as a substitute.
