You could even call them pioneers of girl bands: the three-piece all-girl band Shonen Knife.

They started in 1981 and, despite a few lineup changes along the way, they’ve never broken up—a long-running band known for their energetic live shows, popular not only in Japan but overseas as well.

The members are Naoko on guitar, Atsuko on bass, and Risa on drums.

Vocalist Naoko has been a member since the early days.

They’re a band that can rightfully be called one of Japan’s representatives, having shared stages with illustrious international artists and performed at famous festivals.

Formed in 2005 and hailing from Osaka, BURNOUT SYNDROMES is a three-piece rock band that calls itself a “youth literature rock band.” They have frequently performed theme songs for anime such as Haikyu!! and Gintama., so even if you’re not a music enthusiast, anime fans may have heard their tracks.

Their music features the sharp, jangly guitar sound and straightforward riffs characteristic of guitar rock, paired with the passionate vocals of Kazumi Kumagai, which are highly compelling.

They produce a wide range of songs, from upbeat, high-energy tracks to rock ballads tinged with melancholy.

When it comes to quintessential three-piece bands of the Showa era, it has to be these guys.

Formed in 1973, they brought hard rock into Japanese living rooms with hits like “Marianne” and “Hoshizora no Distance.” A legendary band that absorbed flavors of heavy metal, progressive rock, and new music, sublimating them into their own sound, their greatest appeal lies in the powerful, ringing guitar and bass paired with beautiful vocals and harmonies.

Even now, they keep producing work that incorporates elements of British rock and punk rock—you just can’t take your eyes off them.

A three-piece band formed in 1985.

It brought together rising stars of the time, including bassist Nishimura, who worked as a studio musician.

After their debut they racked up a string of smash hits, and their shows sold out, making them a hot act.

Most impressive of all, despite some hiatuses, they’ve kept going for over 30 years.

You wish every band could be like that!

While they often welcome support members for live shows, as a band that officially operates with three members, we can’t forget Queen Bee.

Their vocalist captivates fans with a powerful yet delicate singing voice, and the dramatic, tight band sound draws listeners into another world.

In particular, Avu-chan’s performance as the vocalist is remarkable, steadily pulling you deeper into Queen Bee’s unique universe.

They exude a presence that’s both profound and approachable, so if you haven’t listened yet, this is the perfect chance.

Karasu is a three-piece band perfectly suited to words like “emo rock” and “surging shouts.” The members are Junichi Konno (vocals/guitar), Yuki Furuya (bass), and Shuta Chiba (drums).

Although they are based in Akita Prefecture, they’re active nationwide.

Their major-label debut single “Yume,” released in 2009, drew attention as the theme song for the TV drama Uramiya Honpo REBOOT, and it became a hot topic thanks in part to the show’s popularity.

This band, memorable for its left-handed singer-guitarist, is TETORA, a three-piece girls’ rock band from Kansai.

Above all, what stands out in their songs is the husky voice of Yune Noba, who sings and plays guitar.

Their passionate, piercing lyrics are another key part of their appeal, and together with their pleasantly overdriven, easy-on-the-ears guitar sound, they’re a band I’d recommend not only to rock fans but to anyone.
