Competitions that parents and children can enjoy (1–10)
Penguin Race

Here’s a game where you walk while holding a balloon between your knees.
Since the way you walk looks like a penguin, it’s called the Penguin Race.
If you squeeze too hard, the balloon might slip out from between your knees and float away, making it hard to reach the finish line.
Split into teams and pass the balloon to the next runner like a baton.
You could also skip teams and run it as a tournament or round-robin for extra fun.
It’s a race that can be enjoyed as a parent–child activity too, so give it a try!
[Parent-Child Event] Which one is the vegetable?

Introducing a sports day event at kindergarten that children can enjoy together with their guardians.
Work as a pair to clear various obstacles and aim for the goal.
At the teacher’s signal, the guardians start.
First, find your partner.
Look for your younger partner who is hiding inside a big box.
Once you’ve found your partner, the two of you will keep clearing the obstacles ahead, one after another.
Coordinate your movements and overcome the tough spots together.
After you’ve cleared all the hurdles, cross the finish line together to complete the game.
Operation Hide-and-Seek

What kind of event is “Hide-and-Seek at the Sports Day”? This version is a hide-and-seek game that parents and children can enjoy together, where the guardians try to find their own child.
First, the children get into boxes placed on the field.
During this time, the guardians should avoid seeing where their child goes—by turning around, for example.
Once everyone is hidden, the guardians open the boxes all at once to search for their child.
The parent-and-child pair that finds their child quickly and reaches the finish line first wins.
You can make the event even more exciting by having the parent give their child a piggyback ride or by adding obstacles on the way to the goal!
Parent-child obstacle race

A parent-child event where parents and kids participate together in an obstacle race—the classic you’ve probably seen at every sports day or field day.
Parents and children clear the same obstacles together, or mom or dad helps the child get over them, working as a team to reach the finish line.
The rules make it enjoyable for both parents and kids.
Because adults and children differ in size and build, it presents challenges unlike competing alone, letting not only the children but also the adults feel like kids again.
It’s a simple yet profound event where well-synchronized teamwork determines victory.
Urashima Taro

Many people are familiar with the folktale Urashima Taro.
How about trying a parent-child event inspired by that story? First, the child wears a loincloth like Urashima Taro.
Then the parent carries a turtle shell on their back, and together they take on an obstacle course while holding hands.
Preparing obstacles based on the story—such as “obtaining the treasure box”—will make it even more exciting.
Wearing a mask with a beard could be fun, too.
Family-friendly events (11–20)
[Parent-Child Event] Ball Carrying
![[Parent-Child Event] Ball Carrying](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Zw-jzHCmU9A/sddefault.jpg)
Let’s enjoy the sports day with an event where adults and children work together to quickly carry a large ball to the goal.
This team-based game is all about cooperation between two people.
Keep in sync and aim for the goal quickly without dropping the ball placed on the tray.
The rule is that the tray holding the ball must be carried by the two of you while running.
Be careful—if you run too fast, the ball will roll off.
After making a U-turn at the target point, keep your focus and carry the ball all the way.
Do your best until you can pass the baton to the next person!
Cart-pulling relay

The basket-pulling relay, which is popular for parent-participation events, is one of the classic sports day activities at many preschools.
It’s especially great for infants who aren’t ready to run yet—by sitting in a box and being pulled by a parent, they can enjoy the exhilarating feeling of running themselves.
Even with simple rules—head toward the cone, turn around, and come back—it can be surprisingly demanding.
Children may feel the thrill of running, while parents may feel like they’ve run a long distance! It’s a really fun event, so definitely consider including it.
