Debut song of a 90s visual kei band

A visual kei band that revolutionized the Japanese music scene with their innovative musicality and glamorous looks.

Even major artists that everyone knows today—such as GLAY, L’Arc~en~Ciel, and DIR EN GREY—once took their very first steps as newcomers.

While influenced by X JAPAN, each established a uniquely rich musical identity and forged a new era.

Here, we introduce the debut songs that became their starting point, hidden behind the bold makeup and costumes.

VENUSSTRAWBERRY FIELDS

This is the single released in April 1991 by STRAWBERRY FIELDS, a band formed mainly by Yoshifumi Fukui from D’ERLANGER and LEZYNA from JUSTY-NASTY.

It was also included on their debut album “nouvelle parfum,” released in March of the same year.

The dramatic sound and high-energy vocals are a perfect match! With powerful lyrics about breaking through inner doubts and soaring into the future, it likely encouraged many listeners at the time.

It gives you the strength you need when taking a new step forward.

Fallen Angel BLUEΛucifer

With guitar riffs that slice through the darkness and a driving beat that grabs the listener by the heart, this is a passionate track.

It portrays the impatience and pure longing of someone who keeps reaching out even while knowing it’s forbidden, capturing the descent into ruin.

The heartrending cry that dwells within its decadent beauty is truly stirring.

This song is Λucifer’s striking debut single, released in September 1999.

As the opening theme for the TV anime ‘KAIKAN Phrase,’ it dramatically colored the world of the series.

swaying gentlyMASCHERA

This is “Yurari,” the major-label debut song by MASCHERA, a band whose name means “mask” in Italian.

They debuted in 1997 under Teichiku Entertainment, a label primarily focused on enka and kayōkyoku.

Above all, the beautiful singing voice is remarkable and can be said to be a defining feature of the band.

SO BAD BOYBY-SEXUAL

This is BY-SEXUAL’s major-label debut track, brimming with rebellious spirit that flips the bird at society’s rules.

Released in February 1990.

Its raw punk sound perfectly matches lyrics about tearing through the streets at full blast without caring if people call you a delinquent.

The urge to break through a sense of stagnation and to push back against something is a feeling everyone’s had at some point.

If you’re fed up with the constraints of everyday life, listening to this song and letting your emotions run free might be just what you need to face tomorrow with a clearer head.

SunflowerSOPHIA

SunflowerSOPHIA

This is the band SOPHIA, led by vocalist Mitsuru Matsuoka, who is also active as an actor.

For a visual kei band, their songs are pop and their fashion is casual, with lighter makeup.

At that time, visual kei was the trend, and it was normal for any band to wear makeup and operate as a visual kei act.

BelieveD-SHADE

D-SHADE made their major debut in 1998 with the single “BELIEVE,” and became well-known after their second single, “ENDLESS LOVE,” was a hit.

Although they maintained their popularity, the band disbanded in 2000 when the vocalist, HIBIKI, switched careers to become a racer, making it a band with a relatively short period of activity.

Role-Playing Bonnie & ClydeCASCADE

CASCADE had a sound that mixed programmed techno elements with pop punk, and because of vocalist Tama’s looks, they were introduced as a visual kei band at the time.

However, as you can tell from the kanji used in their music videos, the band themselves may not have intended to operate as visual kei.
