As a sparkling and beautiful classical piano duet, I recommend Fritz Kreisler’s “Schön Rosmarin” (“Lovely Rosemary”).

This work has been arranged for piano four hands, and it fills listeners with a sense of elegance.
It’s a three-beat waltz that is bright, dazzling, and easy to listen to.
The character is that of a typical Viennese waltz popular in 19th-century Vienna, and playing it on the piano can make you feel like nobility.
It’s also a great recommendation for anyone looking for classical piano duet repertoire.
“Mars” from the suite The Planets, Op. 32-1Gustav Holst
When it comes to The Planets by the British composer Gustav Holst, most people think of Jupiter, but the first movement, Mars, is just as essential.
Characterized by its heavy use of repeated notes, it conveys the grandeur and majesty of the planets that exist in the cosmos.
Although originally an orchestral work, the piano sketch was written for two pianos, allowing it to be performed with a sound that loses little compared to the orchestral version.
Since its debut, the piece has made a strong impact among works themed on space and influenced ideas for later music, including John Williams’s Star Wars.
While performing it as a serious classical piano duet requires stamina, it is highly recommended for those considering an authentic classical duet for a piano recital.
Pairing it with the famous Jupiter will further highlight the appeal of the suite The Planets.
Suite ‘The Nutcracker,’ Op. 71a – TrepakPyotr Tchaikovsky
How about the suite The Nutcracker by Pyotr Tchaikovsky? This piece comes from the ballet The Nutcracker.
While the original is known as an orchestral work, there are also scores arranged for piano four hands.
Among those, a particularly popular and dazzling selection is the Russian Dance, or Trepak.
Some people associate it with the movie Home Alone, but the piece used in the film is a different work composed very much in a similar vein with a similar character.
From the very beginning, the music bursts with a lively melody and a sense of drive.
Thanks to its brilliant, joyful character, it’s an excellent recommendation as a duet piece for a recital.
Jupiter, from the suite “The Planets,” Op. 32Gustav Holst
For a piano duet at a recital, I recommend Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets.
Among the masterpieces of classical music, the most famous work within The Planets is probably Jupiter.
Compared to the other movements, its grandeur and easily recognizable melody make it appealing to many listeners.
Although the original is an orchestral suite, at the time of composition Holst completed piano sketches for two pianos for six of the movements (all except Neptune).
As a result, a duet version can be just as compelling as the orchestral one.
Performing the full piece will give a great sense of accomplishment, but if it feels too difficult, you can start by playing the famous melodic sections.
A Long, Short FestivalShiina Ringo
As the second release of 2015 from Ringo Sheena, the single “Nagai Kawaii Matsuri” has been arranged into a stylish and cool piano duet.
Of course, a cool song is already cool in its original form, but here is a piano duet arrangement that even fans will find convincing.
Every section—the A verse, B verse, and chorus—sounds great, but the standout is the solo in the middle.
In the original, the brass section hands off to a piano solo, but in the duet arrangement, it’s faithfully recreated using only the piano.
It preserves the atmosphere while bringing out the best of jazz and piano.
This is what you’d call a high-quality arrangement.
Even if you’re not a Ringo Sheena fan, it stands on its own as a piece for piano duet, and if performed with flair, it will surely captivate the audience.
Even from a listener’s perspective, this is a highly satisfying and very listenable arrangement.
[Advanced] Piano Duet Works | Exquisite Masterpieces to Savor the Profound Sonority of Four Hands (41–50)
Dragon Quest V “Wedding Waltz”sugiyama kouichi
The nationally popular game Dragon Quest, which invites players on a hero’s adventure, features the “Wedding Waltz,” now arranged for piano four hands.
Supervised by composer Koichi Sugiyama, it is included in the piano collection Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
The piece plays during a pivotal scene in the game and leaves a strong impression on those who have played it.
It’s no exaggeration to say this piece represents Dragon Quest V.
Stylistically, it’s a typical Viennese waltz of the 19th century, giving it a very classical feel.
It’s a brilliant, fully realized composition that could easily be mistaken for standard classical repertoire if one didn’t know the game, and it would fit naturally in a piano recital.
It’s best performed with a bright, bridal image in mind.
Thunder and LightningJohann Strauss II
Here’s an intermediate-level piano duet piece from a classical masterpiece.
Johann Strauss II’s polka “Thunder and Lightning” has been arranged for piano four hands.
The arrangement in the video is included in Noriko Omura’s Duet Piece Selection and is presented as a cool duet piece.
The original is for orchestra, but this arrangement preserves the original timbres while making it fun to play as a duet.
In the orchestral version, the bass drum vividly depicts thunder and the cymbals lightning; in the duet, these are expressed through rapid passages and dynamic contrasts.
When performing, the key is whether you can convey on the piano what the percussion does in the original.
Simply playing loudly will only make the sound muddy.
It’s a good idea to record your performance and aim to capture those subtle nuances!
